The Coleman Echelon furnace series is available in four models. The mid-efficiency series is available in constant speed (8.M) and variable speed (8.C) models operating at 80 percent AFUE. In the high-efficiency, Energy Star-rated series, the constant speed (9.M) is available at 97 percent AFUE and the variable speed (9.C) model at up to 98 percent AFUE.
These furnaces use induced combustion, a hot surface ignition and aluminized tubular heat exchangers. As modulating furnaces, they fire at 1 percent increments for maximized indoor comfort. The variable speed models come with an optional ECM fan motor that circulates air for long periods of time to improve air filtration and maintain consistent temperatures throughout the home.
We bought this unit in 2009 and are replacing our fourth manifold gas valve. Coleman tech and wholesaler were of no help in diagnosing problem. What we did learn through all this was the valve and motherboard for this model was upgraded in 2008 to correct the problem. Judging from the reviews, the model upgrade didn’t fix the problem. We are going to bite the bullet and shop for a reliable brand other than Coleman or any other product owned by Johnson Controls. One other note, good luck trying to get through to Coleman customer service which was quite inadequate.
"Coleman furnace and a/c"
Furnace is 7 years old and the gas valve has been replaced 3 times, the flame sensor once, the plastic water collector cracked, and this summer the evaporative coil for the ac leaked and was replaced. I, personally would not buy the Coleman HVAC system. It has too many unreliable parts made in Mexico.
"Replaced 4 gas valves in 6 years"
Purchased this model in 2011. I love its efficiency and how it works. I don’t love that we have had major repairs on it every year so far, including replacing the gas valve 4 times! It is an expensive part and often the trouble happens in the middle of winter, which means we are without heat for days at a time every year. The technicians can’t tell me why it is happening. I am very unhappy with this model.
"Just received new unit"
This is a brand new Coleman furnace. We just had it installed at the beginning of October 2016. We have rated this unit as being Very Satisfied with it because our previous furnace was also a York furnace and it had definitely stood the test of time, it was an excellent unit except for it not being energy efficient anymore. We can only hope that this new York product is as excellent as our old one. Thomas and Julie Shaw, Brampton, Ontario, Canada.

There are people with bad reviews. No company is perfect, none. This company makes a great product, great price, had no issues with mine at all. My last system I had was a Coleman, it also lasted 15 years and was still working. I just decided to upgrade to the more efficient system, that’s all.
While the Echelon series is promoted as being extremely quiet, consumers in online discussion forums complain about the operational noise. Several technicians replying to this concern on hvac-talk.com suggests that the noise is not from the unit itself, but from the air flow in the duct work. Addressing another noise complaint about the Echelon, a technician on askville.amazon.com explains that the furnace uses a blower system to burn the gas at utmost efficiency. According to this tech, this can lead to a high pitched whine that could be the cause of the complaint.
Coleman offers two types of warranties for the Echelon series. The standard warranty offers coverage for 5 years on parts and a lifetime warranty on the heat exchanger. Ten-year coverage on all parts may be purchased separately. The premium system warranty is available to those also purchasing an approved matching air conditioner or heat pump. It provides protection on parts for 10 years, while the heat exchanger and compressor are protected for the lifetime of the unit.
