Central Boiler Classic Wood Furnaces

Central Boiler Classic Wood Furnace Overview

The Central Boiler Classic is a wood furnace available in four models, with a tank capacity ranging from 140 gallons to 764 gallons. It features a ripple top design for increased heat transfer area and a vent cap designed to eliminate evaporation. The unit's large, insulated cast iron door is designed for easy loading and maximum efficiency, with a powder coating for increased paint durability. A water-filled HeatLock baffle will not warp or burn out, and sprayed-on urethane foam insulation forms an airtight seal around the water jacket. Due to the EPA's New Source Performance Standards, new Classic models will only be available until the end of 2015. Base models of the Classic start at $5,490, though prices can vary depending on shipping and options.

"Contaminated steel in firebox, rots in 4 years."

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

I cannot say enough negative things about Central Boiler – I bought a CL 6048 in 2009 and got the 25-year warranty for it. I use it for heating my shop and house, and it runs all winter long in Connecticut. It worked fine for the first 4 years, and then began to pit on the right inside face of the firebox. The other sides and baffles were fine, but over the last 3 years it has gotten so bad that the pitting has eaten right through the steel into the water jacket! I called Central Boiler and tried to get them to honor the warranty, and they proceeded to tell me that I needed to be using the water treatments (which I have used the entire life of the furnace) and it was my fault for not maintaining it! I do everything they mention in their owner's manual, and when I told them that the steel was contaminated (per a metallurgist's inspection) they told me there was no coverage in the warranty for that, only for cracks and welds, and there was nothing they could do for me. I will never purchase another Central Boiler again, and advise everyone else to do the same, as they do not stand behind their products. A furnace like this is a major investment, and should last more than a few years.

"There is no warranty"

They advertise a 25 year warranty but midway in to my 2nd winter of use it sprang a leak on the back under the chimney. Dealer came out and pulled off the foam insulation on the back and it had rusted through from the outside in. Since I used the proper cb chemical and kept the ph correct, the interior of the steel was perfect. Pinholes had leaked under the insulation and corroded it from the outside. You could punch through the steel wall, it was so thin. My dealer figured they had gotten some bad Chinese steel. He called it in and here is what they offered to do. Next time they had a truck in West Virginia they would pick up the boiler and take it back to the factory and repair it with me paying for the labor and return shipping and installation. Plus I had built a sturdy lean-to cover over it that would have to be dismantled. And I wouldn't have heat for the rest of the winter. I told the dealer that was no warranty and he agreed. He hired a local welder to repair the back then I painted it with hi temp engine paint and sprayed it with foam myself. It has worked fine since. They do not stand behind their products!

"Very happy"

Installed it myself, tied it into the same system as my gas boiler so the gas turns on when the wood burns down. It has worked perfectly for ten years with zero issues. I live in southern Alberta Canada and it gets very cold in the winter. This boiler works great. I'd agree with the comments from those who had someone install their boiler. Seems most experts are full of it these days. I recommend, if possible, doing it yourself.

"Quickly rusted, now junk"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

I bought a 5030 Classic in 2007 and in 2008 the door handle came loose and water boiled out. They did honor the guarantee since others had the same problem, I just had to pay the shipping. Now last fall the thing started leaking from the outside. I took off the insulation only to find lots of outside rust and holes on the bottom, none on the side. After calling my dealer and Central Boiler they wanted pictures, then more pictures. Now they want water tests. I told them there is no water, it all leaked out and that I did all the testing and used rust inhibitor yearly. Getting the runaround and thinking I will weld it myself. Stay away from Central Boiler.

I love the Hawken furnace that we are using, we have been using this for almost 7 years now. I recommend this to everyone looking for an outdoor wood furnace.

Other Classic Reviews

A homeowner on hearth.com was trying to choose between the Classic and a Heatmaster unit which was $2000 less. A couple of people said to get the Heatmaster because the price is so much lower, but a slight majority preferred the Classic because Central Boiler is a bigger company with more support. A homeowner on forestryforum.com deciding between the Classic and the E-Classic was told by most responders that the Classic is time-tested and that most customers have been satisfied with it.
