The Carrier Performance is a series of heat pumps with an efficiency rating up to 17.2 SEER and 9.5 HSPF. Performance Series heat pumps are compatible as part of a Hybrid Heat system and three of the four models are Energy Star qualified. The Performance is available in both single-stage and two-stage scroll compressor models and features a compressor sound blanket which helps provide sound levels as low as 68 decibels. The louvered steel coil guard and galvanized steel cabinet with baked-on powder paint help resist rust and corrosion. Performance heat pumps use the non-ozone depleting Puron refrigerant.
"Bad equipment, terrible installation and service."
I bought two Puron 38ydb037 heat pumps and two variable speed furnaces systems from West Georgia heating and Cooling. I got lower specification equipment than I paid for and got terrible service. Most of the system problems were bad installation, but the Carrier dealer and Carrier Corporation would not voluntarily fix them. I had two other Carriers and the State a/c Inspector document numerous problems. The dealer was fined and put on probation by the State Regulatory Board but Carrier Corp was no help at all. Avoid Carrier, they will not stand behind their products and their customer service is terrible!

"Fix for noisy compressor"
I purchased a Performance 3 ton unit in December 2010. The unit heats just fine but the outside unit is very loud – sounds like a helicopter or car engine outside my window. Worked with my contactor who got the Carrier regional rep involved and the rep said the problem was caused by vibration from the compressor getting into the frame. He recommended replacing the 4 bolts that support the compressor with 4 anti-vibration bolts (made by Carrier). The bolts look like small engine mount bolts as they have rubber around them. My installed the new anti-vibration bolts and the unit run very quitely now. It was an amazing transformation. Not all units have this problem but some do.
"Great Heat pump/ AC unit"
Just purchased two units, a 2 ton and a 4 ton. Purchased to replace 16 year old Ruud units, one compressor failed and the other was leaking. My installer did a great job of installing the Carrier units and my initial impression of these units is great. Our area has temps from the mid 20's (usually a few days)to the 100's for many days in the summer. This year 2009/10, we had record lows for weeks at a time. Once temps got below 38 the Ruuds used aux heat most of the time. The Carrier Performance units are generating heat down to the 25's without aux heat. The air handlers manage the air flow so you don't feel the cooler air at the beginning of the cycle and ramp it up when the air is hotter. The outside units is much quieter than my old Ruuds. So far, I am very please with Carrier units and hope for many more years of warmth and cooling. By the way, the Ruud units did very well for the money I put into them and performed fare with semi-annual maintenance.
"Excellent So Far"
Just installed a Carrier Performance series heat pump 25hpa5 paired with an indoor Infinity series fan coil. This replaced an almost 20 year old pure electric resistance furnace and an old Carrier central air conditioner. The heat pump is great — very quiet and as far as I can tell with just 2 months use very energy efficient. The indoor fan coil makes less noise than my refrigerator. With the moderate temperatures here in the Pacific Northwest (Portland), this combination will be great.
While there are only a few online comments regarding the Carrier Performance heat pumps, they are generally positive. There are threads on diychatroom.com and doityourself.com concerning the unit not defrosting, but the problems appear to be caused by installer error and not a problem with the unit itself.

Product registration is required within 90 days of installation for maximum warranty coverage. The warranty for owner-occupied, residential applications is a 10-year limited warranty on parts and the compressor for the original owner and 5 years for a subsequent owner. If the unit is not registered within 90 days of installation, the warranty is reduced to 5 years. For other residential applications, such as apartments, the warranty period is 5 years on parts and is non-transferrable.
