The Carrier Performance is a series of heat pumps with an efficiency rating up to 17.2 SEER and 9.5 HSPF. Performance Series heat pumps are compatible as part of a Hybrid Heat system and three of the four models are Energy Star qualified. The Performance is available in both single-stage and two-stage scroll compressor models and features a compressor sound blanket which helps provide sound levels as low as 68 decibels. The louvered steel coil guard and galvanized steel cabinet with baked-on powder paint help resist rust and corrosion. Performance heat pumps use the non-ozone depleting Puron refrigerant.
Purchased 2 Carrier heat pumps, and even purchased the extended warranty through ***** ***, Boca Raton. We could have purchased brand new units for the costs that have been associated with keeping these units running. Our renters are frustrated and when I get e-mails and phone calls of their frustration, because I live out of state, it makes it very difficult. I can honestly say that these units are poor performers, we will never purchase another Carrier unit of any kind. Our renters want to replace them with another brand and charge them to us because they cannot live in Southern Florida without ac. These units were installed 9/21/2011 and there have been dozens of service calls this year alone. Why purchase a Service/Maintenance Agreement if they do not cover everything, especially when the parts are suppose to be covered till 2020? Signed, Disappointed in Carrier 🙁

Bought this heat pump on 7-24-2010. Already had to have the motor replaced. Now, after having the unit only 5 years, the A/C has quit again. I had a Trane 22 years and only had it worked on twice. Heat pump sounds like a helicopter in winter time.
"Don't buy! They are a nightmare"
Bought two, paid around $10,000. One broke within the first few years. Carrier is not responding to repeated attempts by my contractor to speak with them and they are now claiming no warranty was ever filed for my units. They claim to have no records and therefore are not willing to help. This is the coldest winter in years and my unit has not been working for a week! Carrier appears to not care in the slightest.
"I am so tired of being cold."
I am so thoroughly disgusted with this HVAC unit. My house is cold and I can't get it to warm up to 70 degrees. We replaced our old unit in August and have had the installer back at least once a month, and sometimes twice a week, to try and get this right. I realize heat pumps don't work as well as gas furnaces but sitting around in sweat pants, sweater and wrapped in a quilt is not how I want to spend my nights. The vents kick out cold air into the room. I like to put the heat back at night and sleep in a cool house. My old unit I could put back to 58 and advance it at 6 A.M. And it would warm the house up to 67 by 8-9. This unit I set back to 62 and by noon it may be up to 66. Getting it to 70 takes a hold and all night running. My installer has been trying. I'm not sure if they don't know what they are doing or if the unit is defective. I am tired of being cold!
While there are only a few online comments regarding the Carrier Performance heat pumps, they are generally positive. There are threads on diychatroom.com and doityourself.com concerning the unit not defrosting, but the problems appear to be caused by installer error and not a problem with the unit itself.

Product registration is required within 90 days of installation for maximum warranty coverage. The warranty for owner-occupied, residential applications is a 10-year limited warranty on parts and the compressor for the original owner and 5 years for a subsequent owner. If the unit is not registered within 90 days of installation, the warranty is reduced to 5 years. For other residential applications, such as apartments, the warranty period is 5 years on parts and is non-transferrable.
