The Carrier 38AKS Gemini air conditioner is a 25- to 40-nominal ton split-system unit meant for commercial use. It has an efficiency rating of 11.3 EER and features one compressor and one refrigeration circuit. Conversion is available to change the unit from a constant volume control to a variable air volume unit.
Surrounded with a pre-painted galvanized steel jacket, the 38AKS features long-term protection from the elements. The outdoor coil construction of the copper-tube aluminum fin further adds to the unit’s durability, as well as its high heat transfer. Additionally, an optional epoxy coating is available for the copper fin coil for use in harsh environments such as coastal areas.
Equipped with 06D and 06E compressors, the use of vibration insulation on the compressor mounting system minimizes noise and stress on components. Start-up reliability is ensured by the inclusion of the crankcase heater which eliminates liquid slugging. A sight glass on the compressors allows owners or technicians to monitor the oil level easily.
Several safety features are incorporated into the design, including an anti-short cycling control, high/low refrigerant pressure safety and calibrated circuit breakers. This unit is shipped with an R-22 holding charge.
We installed a Carrier after our old unit needed replacement after 20 years of dependable service. Since doing so, we have had nothing but trouble with the new system, and worse, indifference from Carrier when we asked for support. They insist we hire a local contractor to come out again at our expense to "diagnose the problem". We have already spent close to $900 on labor after paying more than $3,500 on the original install. As I said…stay away from Carrier AC.
"Just don't buy a Carrier AC"
I brought a 2.5 ton Carrier Heating and ac unit for my home in August 2012 after the one the original unit broke (but had given 14 years of trouble-free service). When winter came (October 2012) I discovered that the unit was overheat because Sears had recommended a unit too big for my ductwork. I fought with Sears all winter to fix the issue, finally getting the State Attorney General involved. They fixed the problem in February 2013 (heater worked fine for the last week of winter). By summer of 2013, I was calling Sears again because the unit was freezing. Unit was leaking and they fixed it. Now it is summer 2014 and I have not had a cool day in my house this whole summer. 6 service calls by Sears and the unit it freezing up. I only have a 1,500 square foot home and this unit has never controlled the climate properly. Just stay away from these monstrosities. Way too expensive and far too unreliable.
"Carrier produces JUNK and warranty is terrible."
I have four a/c units and they are all Carrier. We've had trouble with every one of them from the beginning. We just replaced one of them with another Carrier and quess what? The new unit stopped working about 1 month. The coil was bad. Again after a few months it stopped working again. The various air conditioning contractors all say the same thing, Carrier will not replace their a/c units for any reason and will keep patching them until your warranty runs out.
Other 38AKS GEMINI Reviews
Being a commercial unit, online reviews for the Carrier 38AKS Gemini are scarce. There are several posted comments regarding the unit being out of stock and consumers having to find alternate equipment. In addition, a contractor on hvac-talk.com posts a question about controlling the capacity on the unit’s tandem scrolls, and receives several replies about using a check valve.
