Carrier Brand Overview

Carrier Manufacturer Overview

Carrier provides heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and air handling equipment for all types of homes and buildings. They have a long history of innovation, beginning with the invention of the first modern air conditioner in 1902. Carrier is headquartered in Farmington, Connecticut, and is owned by United Technologies Corporation (UTC).

Carrier History

Willis Carrier invented modern air conditioning in July of 1902 after watching the fog at a train station. After several years of producing equipment for someone else, he started Carrier Engineering with five other engineers in 1915. In 1922, Carrier developed a centrifugal chiller, which made large-scale air conditioning possible. Carrier was purchased by United Technologies Corp. in 1984 and has continued to be an industry leader. Today, Carrier systems can be found at landmarks including the Sistine Chapel and George Washington’s Mount Vernon.

Carrier Products

Carrier manufactures HVAC equipment for residential and commercial applications. Their equipment includes air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps and boilers. Most of its products are available at three price levels: Comfort, Performance and Infinity. The Comfort series is the most economical, Infinity is the most technologically advanced and the most expensive, while Performance offers an affordable mid-level series.

Air Conditioners

Carrier offers a variety of air conditioners, including units designed for maximum energy efficiency and quiet operation. The most efficient models are equipped with variable speed motors that provide increased energy efficiency at lower speeds.

Infinity 21 – the most efficient air conditioner Carrier makes, with a SEER rating of up to 21. It has a two-stage compressor that allows the unit to run most of the time on the lowest setting, increasing the efficiency of the unit.

Comfort 16 – this model offers a SEER rating of 16 at an economical price. It also features a sound rating as low as 72 decibels, and all sizes meet ENERGY STAR qualifications.

Gas Furnaces

Carrier gas furnaces come in a number of different models that offer energy efficiency and reliable, quiet operation. Modulating motors allow for more flexibility and efficiency. They act like a dimmer switch for a light, allowing precise control of the speed of the motor. Here are a few of their popular models.

Infinity 96 – this model includes a variable speed blower for greater efficiency and a two-stage motor. It offers a 96.7% AFUE rating and meets ENERGY STAR qualifications.

Comfort 95 – an affordable, high-efficiency unit with a single stage motor that features an efficiency rating of up to 96.5% AFUE.

Oil Furnaces

Oil furnaces are not as efficient as gas furnaces, but Carrier oil furnaces still offer impressive AFUE ratings. Choose from a number of different series and models designed for every budget and type of home.

Comfort 80 – a fixed speed unit featuring a “Low Boy” design to fit in tight spaces, this furnace also offers an 86.6% AFUE rating. It also features a fully insulated cabinet and flue silencer to reduce noise.

Performance 80 – this furnace is ENERGY STAR rated and has a variable speed blower for quieter operation. It fits in small spaces while still offering up to 86.6% AFUE.

Heat Pumps

Carrier heat pumps provide both heating and cooling in one unit. They use heat from the outside air to help heat the inside of your home, even at low outdoor temperatures. Many of their heat pumps offer very efficient SEER and AFUE ratings.

Comfort 15 – an efficient, affordable model, the Comfort 15 is ENERGY STAR rated and offers a SEER rating of up to 15 and an HSPF of up to 8.5.

Infinity 18VS – this Carrier heat pump includes a variable speed compressor with five stages. It offers a SEER of up to 18 and an HSPF of up to 11.

Packaged Systems

These systems offer combined heating, air conditioning and air handling in one unit. They work best in mild climate areas. Packaged systems can be all electric or a combination of gas and electric (electric for air conditioning, gas for heating).

Performance 15 – this Carrier model offers Hybrid Heat, which analyzes the efficiency of using gas or electric heat and selects the best one. It also includes up to 15 SEER, up to 8.5 HSPF and an 81% AFUE.

Comfort 14 – an affordable and efficient Carrier packaged system, the Comfort 14 includes a gas-only furnace. It includes a SEER of up to 14 and an AFUE of up to 81%.
