Buderus Logamax Plus GB142 Boiler Overview

The Buderus Logamax Plus GB142 is an efficient wall-mounted gas condensing boiler. Capable of horizontal and vertical venting, with or without a chimney, it is produced in four models with inputs ranging from 84,000 to 214,800 BTU/H and outputs of 22,700 to 196,600 BTU/H. The modulating boiler carries a rating of 90 percent AFUE.

The manufacturer says that the GB142 is unique due to its pre-fabricated, low-loss manifold. The design is intended to achieve improved efficiency and enable the boiler to be installed in a variety of convenient places. The manifold ensures a correct flow rate, and its simple piping helps with quick installation. The boiler can be customized for various flue systems, and add-ons, such as a high-efficiency hot water heater, can be easily installed. With an aluminum heat exchanger, the Buderus GB142 is equipped with advanced technologies and sensors for troubleshooting and integration of add-ons.

"Great Boiler, 4 Years Old"

5.0 rating
Very Satisfied

Recommended by installer, and have had no problems at all with unit. Very efficient, quiet, heats 3600 sf house & indirect hot water well. Annual maintenance (cleaning) is done by certified staff, and I've had no problems. There was a minor pressure adjustment that had to be made once, and the ignitor/ion rod will need to be replaced soon (apparently should be done every 2-4 years anyway) parts cost $150 & easy to do. I'll wait until next cleaning since having no problems. The parts are relatively expensive, and it is crucial to get a proper installation by someone who knows all the things you have to do to tune these things right. After that, no complaints at all. Looks like the aluminum heat exchanger is eroding & may need to be changed in a few years, but so far no big problems. Would have preferred a stainless steel exchanger instead of aluminum. They opt for aluminum in Europe due to higher fuel cost & better efficiency, but I think stainless steel is more durable for the USA.

"Exhaust manifold corroded"

Recently, as I was checking my mechanical room ceiling, I noticed a hole on the exhaust manifold of the Logamax Plus GB142 boiler. When we ordered the part, the Buderus person knew immediately what the issue was and for $109 they shipped us the new part. First of all, that should had been a recall because they are endangering the life of people by allowing CO to pump through the house. There should be a class action lawsuit against them. Second, they have one of the worst technical support and customer service in the market of any technological product that I have dealt with. Third, who in his right mind will design a replacement part that you need to take the boiler off the wall in order to install a foot long plastic drain pipe that their genius engineer wanted to go behind the burner? It is amazing that they are still in the market selling boilers. I have already one of my neighbors tell me that he had to throw his Buderus boilers to the garbage and move to a different company. Companies like Buderus should not be selling anything. They are horrible.

"Buderus GB 142"

Very Unsatisfied

I bought a Buderus Logamax Plus GB142 in 2010 and paid $8,000 for the product with installation. This heats my water and I have 5 zones for baseboard heat in my home. The first year I had it I was very pleased. It ran smooth, was very quiet and we always had hot water. The next year I had to put $700.00 in for 'routine maintenance'. In 2012, the boiler started to leak and I had to pay another $800.00 for parts and labor. To top it off, the boiler relief valve failed last year and it flooded my basement and cost me over $25,000 in damages. Then this month the fan failed and the condensation pumped cracked and I spent $400.00 in parts to do it myself. The local service contractor wanted $1,200 to come to my home and fix it. Moving forward, I plan to maintain this myself and I have had a difficult time finding someone who knows this system and can maintain it. From the contractors I have spoken with and the reviews I have read online, I wish I went with another product from the beginning! These things should last 15 years before they start breaking!

"Do not buy"

Boiler is 6 years old and has failed three times already. Logic board failed. Safety sensor failed. Fan failed. Lost heat and hot water each time. Replaced all for over $600. Needs more parts, because it makes a horrible noise. Those parts and labor will be over $1000. Gas valve can't be adjusted properly. Need a new one, for another $300. Circulating pump that came from Buderus with the unit is failing. Add another $200 to replace that. So, $2100 in parts/labor on a 6-year-old boiler. I replaced some of the parts, or labor would have been a lot more. And everyone who knows the boiler says the heat exchanger will probably fail when the boiler is about 10-12 years old. That will be another $2000+.

I hate lousy quality

I am a building contractor and I installed my unit myself with the help of my local dealer. My unit has been running for over eight years with no problems. It provides my radiant floor heat, and my domestic hot water using less then 700 gallons of propane a year. I only had to replace the ionization electrode and hot surface ignitor once; a simple fix. Other then that it has run trouble free. I would install it again.

Other Logamax Plus GB142 Reviews

Overall, many of the technicians writing on online discussion forums report few problems with Buderus boilers and recommend them as quality products. However, at least one professional contributor on www.hvac-talk.com offers caution for consumers considering purchasing the Buderus due to a reoccurrence of blockages and other problems in the units aluminum heat exchanger. This poster recommends homeowners purchase products with stainless steel heat exchangers for long-term performance. In another case, a homeowner posting on www.justanswer.com complains of his boiler starting and then quickly turning off. This time the problem seems to be with a defective thermostat sensor.

Logamax Plus GB142 Warranty

The Buderus GB142 comes with a registration-dependent, 5-year parts and labor warranty for residential installations. The heat exchanger has a limited lifetime warranty.
