BUDERUS GB142 Boiler Reviews

"When's the recall?"
Better be handy with tools and have a supply of extra parts, like sensors, for one. Had two companies look at mine when it broke down. Everyone installs it but doesn't know how to repair or service it. I read the manual and fixed it myself. Probably works well with gas, but propane does not work well with this system. Mine is 5 years old and I already have about 800 bucks into it. Was told by a tech that I would be lucky to get another 5 before it completely fails.
We installed this wall mounted unit in our 100 year old stucco house in the Chicago suburbs 7 years ago. We've lived here for 38 years. I'm writing this now because my water heater just went out and I'm considering adding the water heating unit to my boiler instead of replacing the old tank. The boiler has worked flawlessly since installation and my gas bill has been over 20% lower than any with our previous boilers. We replaced a Burnham boiler. Chicago has recently been hit with some of worst winters in recorded history and we were never lacking for comfort.
"Horrible product, horrible service"
Do not waste your time or money on this product! Unit needs constant maintenance and replacement parts or it craps out. Tech support will not help you unless you are a service provider and when you call a service provider they have little knowledge of the system. Parts are ridiculously expensive, customer service places you on hold for ridiculous periods of time, and overall the unit is unreliable and very costly. Product is not recommended at all!
I have had the GB142 in our newish house with a radiant heat system for about 7 years. When it works, it's fine. But there are constant issues with the error codes. The techs that Buderus refers me to don't know what to do, and the most honest answer I get after a fix is, "I can't guarantee this will fix the problem". I have a new issue this a.m. and am considering tossing it altogether, as I have already spent more to repair it over the last 5 years than it would cost to replace. Great concept, bad execution, terrible to non-existent service from Buderus.
"Annual service is a must"
You must have any condensing boilers serviced annually. Many of the early GB142's were charged with the wrong anti-freeze, leading to premature failure of the heat exchanger. Your local power company is not qualified to work on high efficiency gas boilers. We no longer install the GB142 as the new Bosch boilers are superior in every way.
