The Bryant Evolution Plus 90i furnace is a two-stage, 4-way multipoise model with a variable speed blower motor. This furnace is Energy Star rated with an AFUE of up to 96.6% and features home comfort controls for easy operation. The Evolution Plus 90i operates on low stage heating up to 90% of the time for efficiency, and the secondary heat exchanger extends heat transfer. The design of the Bryant Evolution Plus 90i Furnace is CSA certified.
This unit failed on us on probably the coldest temps we have ever experienced. The heat exchanger died last week in the middle of the night last Wednesday morning–it was -26 below outside. Inside temp fell to 44 degrees. Of course, it was several hours before we could get a Technician out because of the demand. The Tech managed to get restarted but it died totally the next morning. It made more sense to replace the entire unit than repair it. The unit was installed in 2005. The unit was finally pulled very late Thursday and replaced by Carrier. In the meantime, we experienced a number of frozen pipes and some water damage. So all this has been very expensive. This unit had a number of repairs in the past 14 years and they were not cheap. The exchanger was supposed to be warrantied 20 years. Well so much for that.

I had this installed when I purchased home a few years ago. Do not purchase Bryant variable speed furnaces. The idea is great, but the heat exchanges are of poor quality and crack frequently. I have had to replace the gas valve and hi/low limit switches several times and will be again it seems as it is operating in low heat again. Multiple, expensive repairs on 4-5 occasions. One was just last spring and now I just got home from a X-Mas trip and house at 50 degrees again. I have multiple rental units with el cheapo furnaces and they do not go bad on a yearly basis. Flawed Design not just my opinion, but that of every service guy who works on them. I am very handy and should have replaced it over the summer.

This is my second unit in 10 years at a cost of $10,000 plus. Each time it is the heat exchanger. The companies that put these units in tell me me that the unit is sooted up from a low gas flow and the warranty is void. How can you produce soot from a low flame? The only way you can soot up anything is by having excess fuel. If the heat exchanger is blocked or restrained, then you are going to have a rich burn causing the soot build up. If the fuel passage into the exchanger is open, you will not have soot. So how is the fuel and soot build not the fault of the blocked heat exchanger? I can’t afford the cost of $5,000 plus to keep replacing this furnace. That amounts to $1,000 a year to repair for a furnace that is supposed to last 20 years. The warranty for the heat exchanger is nothing more than a selling point to sucker you into buying the Bryant unit. I think we need to start a class action suit to stop this from going on further. The product is defective and needs to be fixed.

The heat exchanger failed after 2 years and replaced. Failed again 5 years later. Lifetime warranty for parts, but labor is pricey. I might as well replace the whole thing with a more durable brand.

"I can say after today Do not buy a high efficiency furnace from Bryant."

I bought in good faith what I thought was a good quality high efficient furnace. I now have had to pay over 1200 for a blower that is (get this) no longer available and has to be special ordered therefore the huge amount of money. This is crap and it is only guaranteed for one year!!!!What a bunch of bull. I was informed that I could almost buy a new furnace. Well I”m not and I want your head honchos to give me a call. I will make this product and this company known as long as I am alive. That they are out not in the best interest of the consumer. Do not buy anything but the lowest quality and pick a different company. Or you pay in the nose for something that is obsolete. I want a new furnace from you Bryant and God knows I due not want what you call a top line high efficiency.
Comments on HVAC-Talk message boards and heating contractor sites are mixed regarding this Bryant Furnace:
One person at the HVAC-Talk forums claims to have had no problems with the Bryant unit or replacement of any parts in 20 years. But the compressor keeps going out for apparently no reason. Perhaps this problem is associated with poor or complicated wiring that sometimes interferes with the functioning of certain parts.
Two other people at the HVAC-Talk forums concur. In their particular cases, however, the wiring interferes with the pilot light’s performance, which, in turn, prevents the flame from igniting or causes the flame to extinguish right after starting.
One professional tech at the HVAC-Talk forums clarifies that Bryant’s five-wire valves tend to be aggravating because they interfere with pilot performance.
