Corporate History

A.O. Smith was created in 1874. Over the years, they have manufactured parts for baby carriages, bicycles, and automobiles. In 1936, A.O. Smith patented its glass-lined water tank and started mass production of these tanks in 1939. In 2001, A.O. Smith acquired State Industries, Inc., which nearly doubled the size of its water heater business. They purchased GSW Inc. and American Water Heater Company in 2006, adding the American, Whirlpool, GSW, and John Wood brands to their line of water heaters.

Product Lines

A.O. Smith was the first company to create glass-lined residential water tanks. In 2004, it began manufacturing Blue Diamond™ glass coating on its Conservationist® water heaters which provides more than two times the corrosion resistance of its competitors. Their line of residential water heaters includes the Voltex Hybrid electric heat pump water heater, which comes in 50- and 80-gallon models, has four operating modes and is Energy Star qualified, and the Cirrex solar water heater, which can reduce water heating utility costs by up to 70%.

Warranty

A.O. Smith offers 10- and 6-year warranties on their water heaters. Details vary per model to include tank and parts warranties. Tankless water heaters have a limited 5-year parts warranty and a limited 15-year heat exchanger warranty.
