American Standard Heritage 16 Heat Pump Overview

American Standard’s Heritage 16 heat pump, which the manufacturer also advertises as the XM heat pump in its Platinum Series, is a two-stage system. The unit’s two-stage compressor provides a higher operation of cooling on the hottest of days, a feature that’s designed to save the homeowner money. On most days, the two-stage cooling feature runs at 70-percent capacity.

The line offers models varying from two to five tons, and a capacity of 24,000 to 60,000 BTU. The Heritage 16 is capable of reaching up to 18 SEER and 9 HSPF. Other features of the heat pump are a rust-resistant coating and basepan, which protects the unit from the elements.

The unit worked just fine ( 5 years ) and I was very happy customer. However now that I have a problem with the heat pump/AC the tech can't seem to get the parts from the manufacture. It has been 21 days and counting for a couple wires on the compressor… Simply ridiculous.

5 years ago, I did my research and picked out an American Standard Heritage 16 heat pump to replace the Trane system that came with the house. All of the reviews seemed great. After 5 years, I finally threw in the towel on my American Standard system. We have a two system house, 1 that serves the second floor (heat pump) and 1 that serves the first floor (air conditioner with gas furnace). After the first year the compressor really started sounding noisy, so I called the contractor back. He agreed, but couldn't find anything wrong with it but said if the problem persisted I should consider changing the compressor…it's "under warranty." After weeks of the system waking up my son in the middle of the night, I told him to change out the compressor. After they changed out the compressor I was handed a bill for $1700! I said, "I thought you said this was under warranty?" He said, "It is, this is for the labor." I am clearly in the wrong business. We agreed to a lesser amount after much debate. Even after the compressor change-out the unit had very annoying sounds when it ran. After five years and a few other service issues, I couldn't take it anymore and replaced it and my other system with new Luxaire systems which we have been very happy with. I decided to do more research on the contractor this time and not worry too much about the brand.

"American Standard 16 SEER Heat pump"

American Standard Heritage 16seer 3ton heat pump, 95% 2stage variable speed gas furnace backup. Excellent system, pretty quiet and efficient. Replaced a 4 year old noisy York system. An hvac system is only as good as the installation. A good system installed poorly results in poor performance!!! Get referrals!!! I would recommend American Standard to anyone. Fyi American Standard and Trane are the same company.

Installed a Heritage 16 heat pump this Spring. It seems everything is working just fine. Cost of heating the home is low.

Other Heritage 16 Reviews

A reviewer on gardenweb.com considering a new heat pump asks whether or not the Heritage 16 would provide ample humidity control in a southern region with mild winters. Several professionals on the site suggest the homeowner can't go wrong with the American Standard brand, adding that this unit is a quality heat pump. Others state that in this region the Heritage 15, with an appropriate thermostat and controls, can provide ample humidity control compared to the higher efficiency unit. Other professional contractors note that the heat pump's electronic demand defrost is a helpful featured compared to time/temperature defrost methods.

Many of the problems with the Heritage 16 cited on other forums seem to stem from installation issues. For example, a homeowner on hvac-talk.com has a newly installed heat pump that only puts out hot, never cold, air. Contractors on the site, after a series of questions, ultimately agree that the homeowner is dealing with a wiring issue that the installing technician needs to resolve.
