"Stay Away – Costly Repairs"

I replaced my AC system with an Amana ASZC160481 heat pump and matched "air handler" in May 210. I chose Amana because the good reviews and potential energy savings. The first year the unit worked like a charm. Then in June 2011 the unit lost refrigerant. $720 later it was running again. January 2013, the unit lost refrigerant again. A leak was found near the compressor and $864 later it was running again. A year later in January 2013, it lost refrigerant again. They found a discharge line leaking and a defective Schrader valve. $720 later it was running again. Today, 21 July 2013, the unit stopped cooling. The heat pump is not running, the lines near the compressor look oily and there is a lot of green oil in the bottom of the drain pan. Is this going to be another $800 down the drain? If I knew then what I know now, I would have stayed away from Amana.

Our Heil heat pump went out after 19 years, the last few years being expensive. Our replacement decision was based on two things, Contractor history/reputation, and value. We chose our contractor based on prior service, and reputation. They answer the phone in person, and show up same day, and are one of our largest and best known local contractors. We chose the amana aszc 16 which, feature wise, is their top of the line (they do offer the same features in an 18 Seer). We were able to get amana's top of the line for less than some other brands "middle of the road" units. We now have a variable speed air handler (rated 100% efficient by the epa!), coupled with a Copeland dual scroll compressor in the new heat pump. If the compressor ever fails, amana will replace the entire heat pump. all other parts are covered by a ten year warranty (it says so on the warranty itself). We paid a few dollars more to include a ten year labor warranty. The only requirement is a once a year service call for $85 (the first year is free). The heat pump itself has a higher than advertised hspf rating of 9.8. Our house feels better than it ever has. We can control the indoor temperature and humidity independently, which, here in Florida, is important. We can digitally view the indoor temperature, the outdoor temperature, and the indoor humidity level right on our thermostat. The unit is quiet, and we are comfortable. So, from amana, we got the best warranty in the business, top of the line features, and installation and service from one of our most reputable local contractors, for a price below some competitors lesser units. I couldn't be more pleased.

There are very few online comments about problems with the Amana ASZC16. Reviews on several online forums mention that Amana is actually a Goodman product, which in the opinion of the reviewers is not a good thing. Comparisons on between the ASZC16 and comparable models from Trane, Rheem and Carrier seem divided quite evenly among consumers, with the Amana warranty getting a lot of positive comments.
