Amana VCA Central Air Conditioner | FurnaceCompare®

Amana VCA Air Conditioner Overview

Amana’s VCA condensing air conditioner is advertised as a cost-effective solution for dependable cooling. This model, discontinued since 2003, was available in Amana’s Distinction product line. It offers up to 10 SEER when paired with Amana evaporating coils.

Available in seven different models, Amana’s VCA Series has a cooling capacity ranging from 18,000 to 60,000 Btu/h and was designed for installation in new construction or as a replacement unit.

According to information from the manufacturer, this unit was constructed to withstand nature’s elements, but also blend in with buildings and landscape. A painted sheet metal cabinet, rust-resistant cabinet and screws, corrosion-reducing embossments at the bottom of the unit and a heavy vinyl-coated grill help the unit maintain its appearance and increase its longevity.

Additional features include thick, refrigeration-grade copper tubing, easy service accessibility, a liquid line filter to keep refrigerant dry and a soft-operating condenser fan to reduce noise levels. Amana also offers an extensive line of accessories for the VCA.

Spent 8 thousand dollars to have it installed 8 years ago. Have had something break or replaced at least twice a year/ always costing hundreds of dollars. Now it is a computer board ( second one ) costing 400 dollars a replacement. The first one installed did not work at all, the second one worked for 24 hours and am now waiting to have it replaced again. Will never buy another Amanda product again and will warn everyone I can about this company. My last ac/ heater lasted 30 years with proper maintenance. Will research my own replacement unit before replacing this piece of crap and not trust the installer. By the way my energy bill is off the charts with this energy efficient unit. Might be efficient if it ever worked. And

I purchased the Amana unit three years ago and this is the second time it goes bad. The service guys are great, but the product is less than reliable. Every time it's gone bad is because of a Freon leak from the coils inside the unit. I paid extra money because supposedly it was a top of the line company with a reputation for quality. Now I have to pay to have it fixed again. It's ridiculous because a more economical brand my neighbor has, Goodman, has never given him problems, and he's had his five years longer than I've had mine. I hope that when it gets fixed this time, it lasts longer than a year because this is ludicrous, spending that much money for a product that doesn't live up to its reputation. Just saying this because Amana isn't going to reimburse me the money I've had to pay for the shitty units they sell. If it's made in China, then my bad for not researching it better. And I don't agree to the terms of service because you can't get your feelings printed without your consent of their terms.

In all fairness, I have only had this unit for 6 weeks, so this is a partial review. My unit is very quiet and you can hardly tell this unit is running. I bought this one because it had the most of the features of the highest priced units for a lot less. I did a considerable research and all of the brands Trane, Carrier, Rheem have just as horrible reviews as this one does. I got the newer all aluminum coil because my research showed that the copper/aluminum coils have more of a problem with metal deterioration. I went to local Rheem wholesaler for return air parts, and mentioned coil problems with Amana and he showed me that he had 30- 40 newer Rheem coils ready for exchange and Trane is having the same problem. I saved enough money to get a 10-year labor warranty and still be almost $3000.00 less than more advertised brands. If you get one of these units, spend the $150.00 to get a labor warranty on coil. My research also found that most of the companies use the same Copeland scroll compressor on their units just like this one, and use the same fan motors, capacitors, control boards, etc. It seems that if Trane puts a control board in from one manufacturer, it is not going to be better than identical board installed by Amana.

The unit I purchased as a complete new central heat and air unit has a 10 yr warranty. Beware the warranty is not worth the paper it was written on. The unit has never completed a single year without having the installer out at least 3 times and usually 5 to 7 times per year to repair unit. The unit is almost 7 years old and the heat exchanger had to be replaced. Seems the stainless steel it was supposed to be made from rotted out. As per the technician that came in to fix it, this is probably the cause of some of the problems we have had from day one. But the other technicians miss diagnosed the issue. Also the heat exchanger was supposed to have a 20 year warranty. Well they want me to pay the labor and the shipping of the part. Unit is still within the first full warranty. Bill sent to me was over $400.00 for this repair. I am refusing to pay and if they want to take me to court then bring it on. Also anyone in the state of Oklahoma does not do business with Bob Chambers Heating & Air. They do not stand behind what they sell.

"Piece of garbage"

I would never recommend an Amana anything based on my experience with this ac unit. My home was a new construction built in 2005 and I already have to replace the unit. The condenser coil and cooling fins are completely corroded and falling apart. Customer service was absolutely no help. An obvious manufacturing flaw.
