The Whirlpool Corp. was founded in 1911 by Louis, Fred, Emory Upton, and was originally named Upton Machine Co. In 1929, the company merged with and took on the name of The Nineteen Hundred Corp. The first Whirlpool brand appliance was produced in 1948, and the company was renamed Whirlpool in 1950. Whirlpool Corp. began offering air conditioners in the 1950s upon its acquisition of Radio Corp. of America (RCA).
Today, the Whirlpool Corp. is a leading producer of consumer appliances. In 2013, the company saw net sales of $18.7 billion. Whirlpool today offers Energy Star-qualified room air conditioners under the Whirlpool brand. These units include features such as an "eco mode" that turns off both compressor and fan upon reaching the desired temperature, and the 6th Sense remote sensor to determine when the temperature throughout the entire room has reached the intended cooling point.
Heat pumps, furnaces and packaged air conditioners also are sold under the Whirlpool name. The WGHP line of split-system heat pumps are promoted by Whirlpool for their noiseless operation and high-quality and energy-efficient scroll compressor, while the WHP series is geared toward energy-efficient heating and cooling. Whirlpool brand furnaces, including the WFD, WFM and WGFM series, meet needs for efficiency with their range from 80 to 96 percent AFUE.
