Nordyne is an appliance manufacturer headquartered in O'Fallon, Mo. The company licenses the rights to a number of furnace and air conditioner brands, including Frigidaire, Gibson, Intertherm, Maytag, Miller, Philco and Westinghouse. The company has manufacturing locations in Missouri and Tennessee.

Nordyne is a subsidiary of Providence, R.I.-based Nortek Inc., which trades on the New York Stock Exchange as NTK. In 2013, Nortek's residential heating and cooling division earned net sales of $415.2 million, which accounted for 18% of total net sales.

Corporate History

Nordyne was founded in 1919 in St. Louis as International Oil Heating Co. In 1927 it became one of the first businesses to advertise on the radio. The company is historically notable for developing products such as air conditioners and furnaces for use in trailers and mobile homes. The company acquired the licenses to a large number of outside brands after the turn of the millennium.

Product Lines

Nordyne manufactures many different types of furnaces and air conditioners. Of particular noteworthiness is the iQ Drive technology, which makes use of an inverter-driven rotary compressor within its residential air conditioners, allowing the units to reach up to 25.5 SEER. The company also makes highly efficient furnaces, with two-stage operation and AFUE ratings of more than 95.

The company also designs heating and cooling products to be used in manufactured housing. These are sold under the brands Intertherm and Miller.

Environmental Impact

As part of Nordyne's "ecoLogic" marketing campaign, the company uses an icon on its "green" products, typically those units with relatively high energy efficiency, such as those that have earned the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Star rating. The ecoLogic icon also connotes use of R-410A (Freon) coolant (less dangerous for the ozone layer than R-22), as well as low nitrous oxide emissions. The company also notes that its 25.5 SEER air conditioner is the "greenest" system on the market.

Nordyne operates NordyneWarranty.com, which provides warranty information for different products. All products are covered by a limited warranty. However, the baseline warranty for each product varies based on the company's many brands. "Premium" brands tend to have longer warranties than "standard" brands. Shorter warranties tend to last five years; longer warranties may last ten years or the up to the lifetime of the product.
