Clare (also known as Clare Brothers) manufactured gas and oil furnaces, and was most recently owned by International Comfort Products (ICP). Clare previously made residential furnaces from its headquarters in Canada. However, the brand is no longer being manufactured. ICP also markets furnaces under the brand names of Arcoaire, Comfortmaker, Heil, KeepRite and Tempstar. ICP is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (UTC), which had net sales of $65.1 billion in 2014.
According to information from the lobbying group Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, Clare Brothers can trace its roots to 1840. The company began specializing in heating products early in its history and began distributing its products across Canada in the early 1900s. In its heyday, the company produced a full line of heating and cooling products, the manufacturing organization reports.
In the 1960s, Clare was acquired by the Toromont Group. The company later became a part of Dettson Inc. in Sherbrooke, Quebec; that manufacturer of oil furnaces, oil water heaters and gas and oil boilers was acquired by ICP in 1999. ICP cancelled its trademark for the Clare brand in 2011.
Few Clare Brothers furnaces are available today, although some parts still can be found online. Among the products the company formerly produced is the OHB line of oil furnaces. The three models in this line ranged in efficiencies of 82 to 83 percent AFUE and offered varying output capacities from 76,000 to 98,000 BTUs. Clare also produced the HEG—or Megasave—gas-burning furnace. This lowboy furnace came in four models ranging in heating input from 60,000 to 120,000 BTU/H and output from 57,600 to 114,000 BTU/H. The unit could be vented through either the roof or the chimney.
