Airtemp manufactures furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, air handlers, packaged heating and cooling systems. Airtemp is a subsidiary of Nortek, which had net sales of approximately $2.28 billion in 2013.
Airtemp Corp.'s establishment in 1934 was the result of work on the Chrysler Building, created out of cooperation of the Chrysler Engineering staff and inventor Charles Neeson. The building became the first fully air-conditioned skyscraper. In 1936, the new company moved toward developing cooling systems for railroad cars, but was reabsorbed back into the Chrysler Corp. as an air-conditioning manufacturer in 1938. It remained a segment of the Chrysler Corp. until its acquisition by another HVAC corporation, Fedders, in 1975.
Today, Airtemp products are manufactured by Nortek. Since 2012 they have been sold exclusively through R.E. Michel Co. Inc.
Airtemp's product lines include a variety of air conditioners, heat pumps, oil and gas furnaces, air handlers, coils and packaged systems for residential use. Air conditioning units come in 13, 14 and 16 SEER models, and heat pumps in 8.0, 8.5 and 9 HSPF models. All models of air conditioners and heat pumps use R-410A refrigerant. Airtemp's gas furnaces range from 80% to 95% AFUE, and the company categorizes gas and oil furnaces into standard, better, best and premier efficiency models.
