Note to Viewers: We have been getting this question a lot so I am just pasting this when it comes up again.
You can find a list of the top rated brands on this website here: http://www.furnacecompare.com/ac_ratings.html. You can also find a lot of good general information here: http://www.furnacecompare.com/buying_central_ac.html.
Generally speaking, Carrier, Trane, Rheem, Goodman and a few others are very reliable brands that make a range of central AC units with reasonably high SEER ratings.
As with everyone who asks this question I would add that there is often negligible difference between equivalent models. So beyond reliability you want to look at the level of efficiency (SEER) you'll get for the money you pay. You also want to look at the features offered as well as the warranty. As to the warranty, manufacturers often require you to register the product within 60 or 90 days of purchase in order for the full warranty to take effect.
Lastly, where you will get the biggest bang for your buck is in the installation. You need to hire a certified and talented HVAC tech to ensure you get full efficiency and reliability.
To keep legal happy, let me just say that I am not an HVAC contractor, and you should never even look at your furnace without having a qualified, liability accepting HVAC contractor present. To keep sales happy, let me just say that you can find an HVAC contractor that's happy to take your money here: http://www.furnacecompare.com/perl/find_contractors.pl.
