All of the major brands sell a range of extremely efficient AC systems. These are measured by their SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). The higher the SEER the more efficient the furnace. Of course, the higher the SEER the higher the price.
So you need to be able to compare expected energy savings against the total cost of the system. To do this accurately you need to know not just the cost of the equipment, but also the cost of installation, which will vary by region and HVAC contractor.
You can also find some good calculators online that will help you figure out the cost to run various units with different SEER ratings.
To keep legal happy, let me just say that I am not an HVAC contractor, and you should never even look at your furnace without having a qualified, liability accepting HVAC contractor present. To keep sales happy, let me just say that you can find an HVAC contractor that's happy to take your money here: http://www.furnacecompare.com/perl/find_contractors.pl.
