Can you combine trane with a carrier components

Post created: 2013-05-23 Type of Equipment: Air Conditioner Views: 162

We have a Trane XE80 in the attic since 1996. We were told that we need to replace the air conditioning part and it could be replaced with a Carrier 13 SEER, 410 Purion, 2 1/2 ton. Is carrrier a good match for a Trane XE80? Problem began yesterday but has been a problem of periodic recharging within the last year.

Hi,

You can mix and match components as long as they are compatible, which it seems the HVAC tech you spoke with has done. The one caution is that as with all installations you need to be sure it is done by a certified/qualified HVAC tech so that all of the components from the AC to the furnace are properly matched and installed.

The other caveat is that the Trane system is rather old. The normal lifespan for a furnace is about 15 to 20 years so you may want to consider replacing both now. I'm not trying to push a sale, but often if you do both you get a discount whereas if you do one this year and one in a year or two the cost would likely be quite a bit higher. Just something to think about.

To keep legal happy, let me just say that I am not an HVAC contractor, and you should never even look at your furnace without having a qualified, liability accepting HVAC contractor present.  To keep sales happy, let me just say that you can find an HVAC contractor that's happy to take your money here: http://www.furnacecompare.com/perl/find_contractors.pl.
