I don't blame you for not going with a swamp cooler. My uncle lives in Tucson and I never thought they worked that well.

At any rate, generally speaking there are standards and rules that all AC systems and furnaces must meet so when you compare the top brands there is often little difference in terms of quality and reliability. Each manufacturer will offer AC systems of similar efficiency (SEER) ratings so the real difference may be in the warranty and the features that each offers. So I would consider the level of efficiency she wants (the more efficient the more expensive to buy but cheaper to run) and then compare warranties and features for each.

Then I would talk to the respective HVAC contractors for each brand. This is where the real difference will be made. A high quality install will ensure you get maximum efficiency and reliability from the system. This is also where most of the cost tends to lie.

So you may find little difference between the respective brands, but real difference between the HVAC contractors. This is where the buying decision should be made.

To keep legal happy, let me just say that I am not an HVAC contractor, and you should never even look at your furnace without having a qualified, liability accepting HVAC contractor present.  To keep sales happy, let me just say that you can find an HVAC contractor that's happy to take your money here: http://www.furnacecompare.com/perl/find_contractors.pl.
