Compressor is out

The warranty will vary if you are the original owner or if you purchased the system when you bought your house. There will also be some variation between manufacturers and whether you purchased an extended warranty or not.

However, the average is ten years for the compressor. There is one caveat, most manufacturers require you to register the product within a set period of time (90 days is the average I think) in order to get the 10 year warranty. If you don't do that the warranty will go to five years.

Also, some manufacturers have shorter warranties depending on the product.

The best way to find out if you are covered is to call with your model and serial numbers.

Also, if the system is older than 15 years you may want to consider replacing it since it is at or near the end of its life anyway.
