I think the correct question should be whether to buy a Trane or Carrier. From the research I have done there is considerable consensus that Trane beats York and a number of people who believe that Carrier edges out Trane.
Probably there is little difference between comparable Trane or Carrier models so what it comes down to is how much you want to pay, the efficiency (SEER) you are looking for, and the features that you may want. What is more important, however, is who does the installation. This is generally where most of the cost comes in and where you can create or avoid problems. A good HVAC tech will do a proper heating and/or cooling load calculation (manual J) and will understand how to properly move and condition air throughout the house. They will also have a good knowledge of the variables and intricacies of the system he or she installs.
To keep legal happy, let me just say that I am not an HVAC contractor, and you should never even look at your furnace without having a qualified, liability accepting HVAC contractor present. To keep sales happy, let me just say that you can find an HVAC contractor that's happy to take your money here: http://www.furnacecompare.com/perl/find_contractors.pl.
