Why does my furnace pilot light only stay on when I hold the knob down?

Holding the knob down allows gas to flow while the thermocouple warms up. In your situation, it may be that you have a problem with the thermocouple or the pilot assembly. Because you are dealing with flammable gas, this is something that should be looked at by a qualified heating tech.
