What causes an Armstrong heat pump to freeze up, causing shut down?

Condenser freezes up, with ice, causing shut down. Thawed out iced condenser, unit ran for four days, then iced up, again.

This could be caused by a restriction in airflow, possible a dirty filter, an obstruction in the ductwork, or something restricting the outdoor unit, possibly leaves. You can clean or replace the filter first to see if that helps. Other possible causes include being low on refrigerant, a faulty valve or a faulty relay.

This sort of problem usually needs to be looked at by an HVAC professional. If you'd like to have a contractor take a look at this, we can help you find one, here.
