I have a 50 gallon electric water heater, all of a sudden the water got so hot I couldn't put my hand under it. What caused this to happen?

This is usually a sign of a thermostat problem. A faulty thermostat can cause water to be scalding hot, or no hot water at all. This is usually a quick repair for a professional contractor. If you'd like to have a contractor look at this, we can help you find one, here.
