It's a two stage sound; first stage is higher pitch hum/vibration for short time then the second stage steps down to a lower pitch hum/vibration for another short period then the fan blower motor turns on. Is this normal? We're new to the house; purchased used about 10 years old.

It's always difficult to tell what's normal or not when first moving into a house. This vibrating noise could be a blower wheel that's out of balance, or it could be nothing. If you noticed it, though, I'd definitely say it's something to look into. The best thing to do in this situation is to have a heating contractor take a look at your furnace. If he says there's nothing wrong, at least you have peace of mind. And if there is something wrong, you'll be glad you called before the problem got worse.
