I'm going to plug one of the articles here on FurnaceCompare.com titled: "How to Negotiate with Heating Contractors" (here: http://www.furnacecompare.com/heating-contractors/how-to-negotiate.html). We surveyed a bunch of different contractors about whether they negotiate with homeowners, and what they negotiate for.

In terms of how to negotiate, I think the critical element is making sure you have bids from at least 3 excellent heating contractors. Then ask those contractors to explain the differences in their pricing. Try not to decide based on the lowest price -- a poorly installed furnace or air conditioner can cause years of headache and ongoing repair costs.

In terms of what to negotiate for, you can certainly negotiate on price, but also on service contracts, digital thermostats, etc.

Good luck!
