Kent, a suburb of Seattle is in King County, Washington, in the United States. This city was incorporated in the year 1890 and is the second oldest city in King County. From inception, agriculture was the main occupation. The city was known once as "Lettuce Capital of the World" with the advent of truck farming in 1920s. The population of Kent in 2006, as per the State Office of Financial Management was 86,607 people with a population density of 1095.4/km˛. Kent is hot during summer with temperature of 78° F (july) and cool during winter with temperatures of 34° F (December – February).
The Howard Hanson Dam was completed in 1963 at Eagle Gorge on the upper Green River, and flooding in the Kent area stopped. This enabled industrial development to take place on the valley floor. Kent has the third largest industrial area in United States and houses corporate such as REI, Oberto Sausage etc. Boeing has a manufacturing facility in this city and is famous for developing the Apollo program’s moon buggy. Maytag/ Whirlpool and G.E. Appliances operate their regional distribution centers from this city. Others are Starbucks main West Coast roasting plant, Mikron Industries, the Hexcel Corporation and Sysco.
