About New Ulm

New Ulm, Minnesota lies in the heart of the Minnesota River Valley, approximately 90 miles southwest of the Twin Cities. Its average summer temperature is 72 degrees and its average winter temperature is about 9 degrees. New Ulm has a number of titles, including “the city of charm and tradition” and “the Christmas City.” The Federal Census of 2000 called New Ulm the “Most German City in the USA.” Famous festivals held here annually include the festive parade of lights each Christmas season, Oktoberfest, which celebrates German culture, and Fasching, which is like a German-style Mardi Gras. It also boasts a large network of city parks. New Ulm originally began as a settlement of German immigrants. The settlement was named New Ulm because many of the original settlers were from Ulm, Germany. New Ulm played a crucial role in Minnesota’s early history, as the first steamboats passed through the area and the military chose to build Fort Ridgely there. The German heritage of New Ulm is evident in the layout of the town, the architecture, and the culture of the inhabitants to this day. Its current population is near 14,000. Its current economy has a rich mix of retail, manufacturing, and industry.
