Overview of the XR15
The Trane XR15 is a high-efficiency heat pump that offers up to 16.00 SEER and 9.5 HSPF. A DuraTuff non-corrosive basepan allows for quick and easy drainage, while galvanized louvered panels and a baked-on powder paint prevent rust from forming. The Climatuff compressor is known for its durability and a sound-reduction insulator helps to provide quiet operation. The unit runs on chlorine-free, environmentally-friendly R-410A refrigerant.

But a 3 1/2 ton XR15 in 2010. Coil has gone bad. Trane won't stand behind the warranty. Thought I was buying a superior product with a superior warranty. I was wrong. Trane will never see any of my money again.

"Don't Waste Your Money"
We spent almost $9,000 on this product and it has been nothing but trouble. It has needed repair every few months and the labor charges are not covered under warranty after the first 12 months. Now I just learned that the next repair will cost me over $800 and this heat pump is only 18 months old (and has only been used about 9 months). Probably the single worst purchase in my 66 years on the planet.

"Failing after three years"
My 2.5 ton Trane xr15 15 Seer Heat Pump Split System was installed in March 2014 and has run fine until recently. In May 2017 I had the unit serviced as I do annually. Eleven days later there was no cooling from the unit. The technician diagnosed a sticking txv valve and leak in the evaporator coil. This was repaired. In August the fan in the air handler began to make a throbbing noise upon startup. This can be quite loud and can cause the lower section of the air handler to vibrate considerably. It is intermittent. My current technician from H.E. Smith Company Inc. Is unable to determine the cause of this sound and vibration. System cools but sounds like it's beating itself to pieces.

"Easy to stop a Trane. 3 times in first year!"
Trane Whole House Pump Unit installed May 2016
Model no. 4TWR5030G1000ca, Serial no. 16075mfh4f November 11 2016: blown capacitor at six months' service. March 30 2017: fan blade falls off at 10 month's service. May 8 2017: fan motor fails after one year. Although covered under warranty, would not buy Trane again. Specifying a better capacitor and designing a fan with a 5-cent set screw or cotter pin so that it doesn't come flying off seems like a cheap fix to avoid these headaches in a durable good install costing $5,000 that's supposed to last 10-20 years.

Bought this unit in 2007. It was professionally installed and has worked flawlessly for nearly 10 years. Annual maintenance has been the only cost and unit has helped lower my energy bill.

"Trane heat pump"
This Trane heat pump will freeze you out in the winter. We had the unit checked and the technician said it was running perfect. In order not to freeze in the house we had to purchase an additional heat source to support the Trane heat pump. As a result our electric bill was quite high during the winter months because the Trane heat pump failed to keep the house warm enough to be comfortable. When I replace the unit I will start looking for another unit but not Trane.

"What a great heat pump!"
We moved into our home 2 years ago, and this heat pump was already installed. The home that we were moving from had a Carrier pump, and we had to pour a lot of money into repairs, so we were a little leery about having another one. Fortunately, we needn't have worried. Our Trane pump has been absolutely wonderful! Our heating costs have diminished greatly, and no repairs! It's quiet and efficient and quickly heats our home. There is nothing we dislike about it. We would recommend it to someone else in a heartbeat. In fact, we have a friend whose heat pump went out at the beginning of last winter, and she found out that the entire system had to be replaced. We told her about our Trane, and she researched it as well as other brands, but based upon our recommendation, she decided to wait out the extra three weeks to get the Trane. It was very cold, but she was willing to live with just space heaters, in order to get the pump that we recommended. She is as thrilled with hers as we are with ours.

"Very disappointed. Pure junk."
Outside condenser unit dual capacitor failed in 4th year and needed 2 lbs. of Freon. Freon leak check shows a bad leak in the evaporator coil. 1 month left on warranty because the seller failed to register the unit on time, reducing the warranty to 5 years instead of 10 years. Spent $400 on outside unit and $120 for injecting dye and now an estimate of $1000 in labor to replace coil. Pure junk and Trane knows it from their research on thin copper, and they now use aluminum.

"Is it really hard to stop a Trane? No. It's impossible."
I've owned my Trane XR15 for a couple of years now and I love it. It is very efficient, quiet and looks great on the side of the house. I live in a subdivision with a strict homeowner's association and I get compliments, not citations for how good my heat pump looks! The only thing I dislike is the cost. While I can't remember exactly what I paid, it was more expensive than several other similar units. I've never needed a repair or replacement of any parts, but if I did, I've got a warranty. I would highly recommend the XR15 to anyone looking for an efficient dependable heat pump.

"It does a great job controlling temperature and humidity"
I have had XR15 for about three years now. It was recommended by a friend and I have had no problem with it. It doesnt make much noise however this may vary from installation to installation. I like this unit because we have a larger cooling need upstairs than heating since heat rises from first floor and this heavy duty pump does the job beautifully. The cooling is quick and uniform. This unit may be too big or too small depending on the area so call the customer service to confirm. An oversized system can cause humidity issues, loss of efficiency, and poor comfort overall. The customer support is great and helpful. It is a bit expensive but this is a premium product and is protected by weather-resistant components around all sides. I have had no problems and never needed to repair it but recently when starting after a long interval, it takes quite some time to start and makes noise for few seconds. I would rate it 5 star and recommend this..

Cooling is very efficient. However, those savings are more than lost in the winter. My electric bills have nearly doubled from my last 15-year-old unit. This despite burning a cord of wood and having all CFL bulbs in the house. There is definitely an issue with this heat pump and heating. It's not at all what I was expecting.

We had a Trane XE1200 5 ton heat pump, which ran perfectly for 14 years. A slow leak developed, so we decided to replace the entire system with an XR15. This new system is noticeably much quieter, circulates more air, and uses less electricity than the old XE1200. So we are very happy with it. It keeps the house very comfortable and at a uniform temperature. We had it installed by a factory authorized and trained dealer - this is very important if you want your system to work properly and reliably. It is important to select matched indoor and outdoor units which have been AHRI certified for best efficiency and warranty.

I have had my Trane system for 3 years, and when the fan kicks I get clicking a noise in the fan area every so often. I am not satisfied with having that issue and I have seen that others owners of the same model have the same problem. If this is the case why has this issue be addressed by the manufacturer? I have my unit serviced twice a year so I know it's not because of negligence.

"Loud noises inefficient heating."
Purchased this unit 2 yrs ago and have had problems with it on & off. ac failing, leaks, heat not working etc. etc. The latest being that the heat pump makes excessively loud noises when it is in heat mode (not auto). When outside temps reach 40 degrees it makes a grinding noise like brakes on a wood floor and then cycles into this very loud banging noise, like a baseball bat being slammed against a wall. This happens as it is shutting down. We've had numerous service techs out to look at problem and they say its normal...I'd like them to tell that to my neighbors who are really aggravated about this. It does not happen every cycle, but often enough to disrupt our sleep, as the unit is right outside our Master bedroom and directly across to the neighbor's children's bedrooms. The unit produces heat, but not adequate to keep the house warm and we frequently have a blast of cold air before the auxiliary kicks in. Supposedly this is caused by the coil defrosting..which is not energy efficient ops in my book. Trane customer service does not exist, the reason they do not post numbers on their website...obviously too many problems and complaints that they do not want to deal with. it's a trane wreck!!! Carrier is the Top brand recommended by the hvac Assoc and judging by the way our current system is operating we'll probably be replacing it sooner than we expected to!!!

"HEAT PUMP AND AC"
Purchased Lemon unit November 2011. Had expansion valve issue from day 1. After 3 visits by ac service the unit stopped working in July 2012. I was 12 days without air conditioning because Trane did not have the part and it was being made by Parker Valve Corp. After Paying $45.00 for air freight and $500.00 later the unit was fix. I will never buy another Trane unit. Their Customer Service and Internet stinks! No help from them what so ever.

We replaced our old air conditioner with a Trane XR15 heat pump one month ago. The unit has been running since then with no problems. However, the bedrooms on the second floor have been warming up in the afternoons (80 - 90 degree days) even with the blinds down and the variable speed furnace fan running constantly. I did a lot of research before purchasing our new heat pump and furnace before choosing Trane based on their reliability, availability of parts, and leading edge technology, knowing that Trane is generally more expensive. However, if you are counting on using the federal tax credits (up to $500) and/or a local electric utility rebate, be warned that the SEER ratings that Trane publishes for their equipment are misleading. Trane states on their website, "Not only does the XR15 meets[sic] and exceeds[sic] Energy Star requirements, but it also meets the federal energy-efficiency tax credits." On the same page they say, "The XR15's SEER rating of up to 16.50 and HSPF of up to 9.0 make it an energy-efficient choice for home comfort." My utility company rebate requires an AHRI performance certificate, and the federal tax credit instructions tell you to keep a performance certificate on file. I tried to obtain a performace certificate, but neither the contractor nor Trane would give me one. That is because the XR15 I purchased is not rated and would not meet the criteria, despite the claims on the website. A Trane representative pointed out to me that further down on the webpage is a statement, "This product meets the Energy Star requirements when appropriate indoor unit and coils are used. Ask your contractor for details." I searched the AHRI directory, and could find no combination of the 5-ton XR15 with any coil that had a SEER higher than 14.25. The Trane representative said that the contractor should have told me that my system would not be qualified for the rebate. (I did tell the contractor that I expected to use both the rebate and tax credit.) Energy Star specifies a minimum SEER of 14.5, and the federal tax credits specify a minimum SEER of 15.0. The website led me to believe that my system would qualify.

"Trane Heat Pumps are Awesome !"
We purchased a beach house almost 3 years ago and one of the first upgrades we made was to install two new Trane Heat pumps. Not only does the Trane XR15 heat pump meet and exceed the Energy Star requirements, but it also meets the federal energy-efficiency requirements for additional tax credits. I love the warranty and consistent temperatures that the Trane Heat Pumps provide. Our older heat pump would freeze up in the winter time and blow cold air, we have not had this problem once with our new Trane Heat Pumps. We do have it serviced annually just to insure it is running properly and have not had to make a single repair to either unit since we purchased them in September of 2008. I would highly recommend Trane heat pumps to friends and family in a heartbeat!

"Trane XR 15 with variable"
I am replacing my Rheem seer 10 that is 16 yrs old with a 1.5 ton Trane xr15 with variable speed. It is costing me 5650 but I do get 1500 credit and 400 rebate so in the end it is 3750. Is 5650 a good deal for this unit? I would like to know if I'm getting ripped. The install is next week and I will let you know if this is a good unit.

"Trane over 25 years"
Just replaced a 2 1/2 ton Trane heat pump from 1984 and still was running good, both heating and cooling in Virginia Beach, VA. As far as I know, the unit never needed major repairs. Replaced with a Trane 3 ton XR15 heat pump and variable speed air handler. It works great and the rep is great. You can't stop a Trane they say and I agree. I think the installation has a great deal to do with how well the units work and my installation was top notch.

"Problems w/ Brandnew Trane XR15 A/C and Heat Pump"
After a ton of research and recommendations from several people we wnet with a Trane. We also decided to go with the top of the line xr15 15 Seer unit with the variable speed fan. The installer came highly recommended and does residential as well as commercial work. After one day we noticed that the house wasn't cooling, I went to ther garage the air handler was blowing, checked the heat pump, nothing it had frozen up. A tech came out and checked and said something about the unit not being programmed correctly and reprogrammed it..The unit worked fine again for about 3 and a half weeks, then just the other day my wife heard the heat pump cutting on and off, got the tech back out and it turns out that the "board" needs to be replaced..The part is not in stock since the unit is so new so we have to wait about 4 days. Fortunately, the tech was able to do a bypass, so we still havee air. As far as I'm concerned the jury is still out on Trane, but I can tell you that these problems don't give me much faith in the product.
Other XR15 Reviews
Comments on the XR15 are generally positive. Consumers on both boardreader.com and gardenweb.com have mentioned concerns about the unit's ability to control humidity. There were concerns from writers on both sites about the sound level of the XR15, but most consumers seemed to find the unit very quiet.
Registration is required within 60 days of installation to activate the warranty. The Trane XR15 comes with a 10-year limited warranty on the compressor, outdoor coil and internal functioning parts. An optional extended warranty which can pay for labor and other costs not covered by the manufacturer's limited warranty is available. Also available is an option to purchase transferability of the registered limited warranty.
