Overview of the XL15i

The Trane XL15i is an energy-efficient, single-stage heat pump. The XL15i has ratings of up to 16.25 SEER and 9.7 HSPF, and is the quietest of all Trane's single-stage heat pump systems. A DuraTuff non-corrosive base pan allows for quick and easy drainage, while the WeatherGuard II top protects the unit from damage and a baked-on powder paint prevents rust from forming. The Climatuff compressor, known for its durability and efficiency, is still the only one used by Trane in residential systems.

"Never again"
Purchased this unit two years ago. The last Trane only lasted 10 years (compressor). This one only 2 years. Your warranty sucks. A frog got into the control box and shorted out the circuit board. Trane considers this an act of God. If they sealed the unit against varmints this would not have happened. Parts and labor $939. Never again will I have a Trane.

"Me and the Trane"
Back in 2010 when I purchased my new heat pump I thought that $7500 dollars was a bit steep for the unit's size and capacity but have since found that this unit is more than sufficient to cool my 1500 square foot home. The unit has been nothing but reliable, but being a big advocate for preventive maintenance, I spend $150 a year to have a tech out. I would recommend this XL15i unit from Trane to anyone but suggest that they do their research and not take the salesman's word for it. What I like about the unit is that its smallish size makes it relatively inconspicuous in my back yard, but being under my bedroom window it does wake me in the night if I forgot to close the window. But it's a small issue. Overall it's a great unit.

"Poor quality poorer service"
I purchased two Trane 3 Ton 15 SEER systems in April 2013. One of the systems has consistently experienced significant issues and over the last 8 months I have had technicians out to my home more than 15 times. The evaporator coil has been replaced twice, the unit has had the eev replaced at least three times, refrigerant added, you name it they have done it. When I contacted Trane corporate to ask them to help me deal with the issue and potentially replace what is clearly a faulty unit (as I did not have technicians on-site the numerous other times the unit would require resetting) it took multiple days to get a call back. They are not willing to send a field rep and are clearly not standing behind their products. Getting through to their customer service required that I call them back and though I was told I would be contacted they failed to do so consistently to help resolve the issue. All and all, the product is clearly not adequate. Imagine if your car broke down and required that many repairs in such less than a year's time. The customer service experience was even worse.

"Top ranked junk"
Worst product I ever purchased. It produces approximately 1/2 of the (their) rated heating output at 47 degrees. The gas pressures and temperatures are supposedly good, expansion valves have been changed, no effect. No answer as to why it won't produce. Zero cooperation from Trane.

"Terrible quality"
My 3 year old Trane heat pump needed a new coil already. Glad that I bought the labor warranty. I bought Trane thinking that they are high quility, but I was wrong.

"Not impressed"
Bought this Trane heat pump 3.5 years ago because it was the best on the market. The $700.00 fan motor was just replaced in the middle of a heat wave (no ac) for 8 days. The 10 year warranty did cover the cost of everything but air freight ($45.00) all in all not impressed with Trane heat pumps so far. Hopefully I don't have this problem every 3 to 4 years.

"Terrible quality - Terrible warranty"
My 1 1/2 year old Trane heat pump needed a new compressor already. Trane supplied the new compressor for free, but it cost me $661.00 in labor to get it replaced . My old Trane wasn't much better, but I was told over and over that it was the exception. Apparently that wasn't true. This will be my last Trane. That's for sure. I sure hope my new Trane furnace is better .

"Great so far"
Had XL15i both outside and inside units installed last fall. So far working like it should, my bills this winter are half of what they were last year and it has been colder this year. Last year Was running around 400.00 to heat, this year 200.00 big difference. I did purchase extended warranty so labor would be paid after reading some of the reviews. Can not wait to see bills this summer.

Just installed the Trane XL15i. It's so quiet you need to be next to it to tell it's running.

"Trane XL15i Heat Pump"
Trane XL15i unit replaced a Trane xe1100 unit that failed after about 15 years of quality service. This new Trane is a welcome change. It never calls for the emergency heat and heats like a gas furnace. I highly advise you to look into the Trane XL15i heat pump.

Replaced a working less efficient system with a Trane XL15i. Three years later, the coils are leaking and replaced for $500 free parts under warranty. After start-up, the reversing valve is leaking. I'm looking at an additional $500 for another warrantied part to be installed. As with everyone else... No Trane support. Local Rep does not even fake it like he cares. There is no phone # to talk to a human and the guy that answers my pissed-off emails offers only canned answers that don't pertain to my problem. If you are considering a Trane system, I would suggest you smash your thumb real hard with a hammer and buy something else... It will save you hours of pain later.

"Heat Pump XL15i failed next day after installation"
The Heat Pump XL15i failed the next day after installation at the end of February 2009. And since that time, the heat pump has not performed well even during two consecutive months. The System stuck with the status “Heat On” and hangs and of course, no warm air was coming out of my vents until I reset it manually (set to emergency heat and switch back to heat). The service company has replaced thermostat, defrost board and other components but the problem is still there.

"Trane XL15i"
I had a Trane unit before and it lasted 20 years and was still working but I took advantage of a sale and tax break and replace the heat pump and air handler with new ones that are more energy efficient. The new XL15i and 2/4Tee air handler work efficiently and are much quieter than my old unit. So far I am very please with the new system and it's heating and cooling of the house.

Other XL15i Reviews

Online comments and reviews of the XL15i appear to be quite positive. A few consumers on doityourself.com noticed frost and ice buildup on the outside compressor during cold weather, but no buildup on inside and the units continue to work correctly. In a comparison of two Trane units, the XL15i and the XB13, several professionals gave favorable reviews to both but most seemed to prefer the XL15i.

XL15i Warranty

Registration is required within 60 days of installation to activate the warranty. The Trane XL15i comes with a 12-year limited warranty on the compressor and a 10-year limited warranty on the outdoor coil and internal functioning parts. An optional extended warranty which can pay for labor and other costs not covered by the manufacturer's limited warranty is available.
