*Pricing information sourced:
Thomas, James. National Plumbing & HVAC Estimator. Craftsman Book Comapany, 2018.

Pricing Information

The pricing information comes from two sources: vendors that sell heat pumps directly and homeowners that have received quotes to have heat pumps installed.

We prefer to quote prices from vendors. This allows homeowners to understand roughly how much of a contractor’s quote is for equipment and how much is for labor. However, many distributors do not publish prices publicly, which makes it difficult to find accurate pricing.

Contractor quotes can also give homeowners a good sense of pricing. However, the price ranges in quotes tend to be larger. Some homes need duct work installed; others need both a heat pump and an air handler installed; some contractors charge a higher overhead. There are many reasons for the wide total cost range.

How we choose the best heat pumps

With so many options available, choosing the best heat pumps wasn’t easy. We considered the following factors when compiling this list to make your work easier.

  • Consumer ratings: Reviews and ratings by customers help to understand individuals’ experiences with a particular product. Ratings also provide information on the pros and cons of the different brands and models.
  • Energy efficiency: Another factor to consider when choosing the right appliance is energy efficiency. The best heat pump should help you cool and heat your home efficiently without worrying about higher utility bills. Here we focused on the SEER and HSPF ratings. The SEER rating is arrived at by dividing the cooling output of the unit in a given season by the energy it used up during that period. The HSPF, on the other hand, stands for the Heating Season Performance Factor and is also used to measure the efficiency of a heat pump
  • Average costs: When it comes to the average cost of a heat pump, you should take into account the purchase price, installation costs and running costs. This will help you determine whether the device fits your budget.
  • Sound ratings: It is important that the heat pump you choose features quiet operation. Good sound ratings will ensure you enjoy both comfort and a peaceful home environment.
  • Specialized features: The specialized features of a heat pump will play an important role in determining its performance. Some of the features to focus on include compressor technologies, blower motor speeds and backup heating.
  • Warranties: Most of the top heat pump brands offer excellent warranties on their products. This not only gives you the assurance that you are buying quality appliances but also provides the peace of mind you need when running the devices.
  • Reliability: The best heat pump brands offer reliable performance. This means that you will enjoy consistent comfort all year round, with minimal malfunctions of the major parts of the heat pump.
