Overview of the Ultra

The RUUD Ultra heat pump is an Energy Star-certified two-stage serial communicating heat pump with an efficiency rating of up to 17 SEER and a heating efficiency of 9 HSPF. Certain models feature a 2-stage Copeland Scroll Compressor that ensures accurate temperature control. The compressor comes equipped with a sound blanket for decreased noise and On-Demand dehumidification for humidity control.

Ruud Ultra heat pumps have Comfort Control2 Systems, which provide more than 37 on-board fault history and diagnostics codes for the condensing units by detecting electrical, as well as system faults. The pump’s coil is protected from the elements of weather by a louvered wrap-around jacket. The unit is made with durable materials for withstanding the extremes of weather and is designed to allow for easy maintenance thanks to a single service panel and top-grille that can be removed for motor repairs.

In addition, the Ruud Ultra Series heat pump is “Legacy Enabled,” meaning it can be wired to older models of Ruud air handlers, thermostats and furnaces.

"Very disappointed"
Bought my unit in May 2012. A year and half later had to replace the blower. Now it's gone bad again. Two blowers on a 3 year old unit. My guess is something with the unit is causing them to go bad so quickly. Ruud wasn't much help either. They just told me my service guy needed to diagnose it. Very unhappy with the whole situation

"Rudd has horrible quality products. They are cheap but you get what you pay for."
I have had a new Ruud unit for less than 2 years. During this time I have had the unit go out on me 5 different times. My HVAC guy told me, and I quote, "the unit has internal problems, the copper is weak, it has sprung 4 different leaks in a week's time." Right now I'm working on getting a replacement. I would not recommend it.

"7 years, no problems"
Unit installed 1/08. Haven't had a problem. Maybe the problems are with the installers?

"3 leaking coils replaced in 3 years"
Ruud UPQL-042JEZ Ultra series installed in 2010. One year later coil leaking - no air. Replaced coil 2011 with part #rcslhu4821cu serial #w421103445. In 2012, same exact problem. Replaced second leaking coil with same part number. In 2013, again, no air - coil leaked again. Found out Ruud was supplying parts made in Mexico of inferior copper and knew it. Got a new coil with a new and different part number rcslhu482itu Serial #wc271307948. This one was made of tin and not supposed to leak. Well, no such luck! We are exactly one year out, 2014, and it has started all over again. So expect to replace a coil every year or ditch a 4 year old a/c system. Stressed us out so badly we will now replace it with another brand. I haven't mentioned the cost of freon while waiting for parts and the cost of hours of labor put into tracing leaks and replacing coils. Customer service is impossible to reach - you have to leave a message.

I had my system installed in June of '11 and yesterday, my compressor blew up and punched a hole in the coil. I paid 6K for this unit. I suggest you research your heat pumps carefully before you make the same mistake as I did.

"RUUD Heat Pump"
Had a 20 year old Ruud that had to add freon nearly every year. Heated and cooled fine. December 20, 2010 bought a new Ruud unit 4 ton upql- 048jez with an Emerson programmable thermostat. February 2011 had to replace the upper circuit board and week later the thermostat had to be replaced, service calls on 2-01-11, 2-03-11, 2-10-11 finally fixed. 7-30- 12 had to replace coil because it had rusted and started leaking freon. 8-2-12, unit not cooling, added freon 9-04-12, water collecting in coil pan, ruined my ceiling 10-31-12, unit not heating, removed freon 12-12- 12, same problem, not heating, removed more freon 12-13-12, same problem, not heating, added 4 lbs. freon and replaced the thermostat for the 3rd time 12-18-12,unit run all time, would not go in defrost cycle, therefore no heat. This time serviceman found wire in the wrong place. Is going into defrost mode at the present. Hope I can get to 2013 with no more service calls. would I buy another ruud?????? Not ever!

"RUUD Heat Pump has proven very undependable"
Installed this unit in Sept 2009. 2 1/2 years ago. I have had to have ruud techs out 5 times in 30 months. The last just leaving after replacing a new 4 way reversing valve. Warranty covered part. Labor was $400. Unit cost was over $6000.00. It has also had two leaks and poor heating. Last time I will ever buy ruud. Considering taking my loss and replacing it with a Trane. My last Trane last 18 years and was still running when I replaced it with this one. Boy did I goof.

Other Ultra Reviews

When a consumer asks for advice on the best heat pump on hvac-talk.com, an overwhelming number of responses point to the Ruud Ultra heat pump as the better option amongst the brands in question, including Carrier and American Standard. One particular respondent says that the Ruud Ultra heat pump provides low indoor humidity and allows for better sleep.

On the other hand, several consumers post on these sites issues with their unit’s noise level. One homeowner on hvac-talk.com finds their Ultra makes out-of-the-ordinary noises in the middle of the night when the unit switches to its defrost cycle. Another consumer complains of noisy vibration of a newly installed unit, although other posters on the site urge that homeowner to have the technician come repair what may have been a faulty installation.
