Bought my unit in 2013 and in last year and a half nothing but problems! I can't believe they don't know how poor there quality is. This company needs to be shamed and shutdown. Tried contacting them last year about it and couldn't even get a response!

"Never had issues."
I moved into a house which is actually a house with 3 apts. In Sept 2012. The landlord was in the process of installing brand new heat pumps. I saw that they were the Rheem 13pjl units. I had installed a Rheem gas pack in a house I owned back in '92. I had that unit for 11yrs with absolutely no issues and no service calls whatsoever until I sold that house. Here it is 5 years after the installs of these unit, I have had no issues with mine, nor has the installer/techs been to service them once. I guess judging by all the bad reviews not just on Rheems but all brands that I'm very lucky to have had excellent, professional installs on both of the Rheems I've had!

"Need repairs every season"
The unit has to be serviced every year (summer) only. I've had the air handler replaced, fan and motor on outside unit replaced, and today the compressor blew. That almost $1'000.00 in parts & labor. It's working but only cools the house down to 84* I'm going back to a Trane unit.

Installed in March of 2014. In may of 2014 the A/C needed servicing and since I live in Illinois it doesn't make any heat when the temperature is below 20 so I have to use space heaters. And on 7/18/2016 the A/C isn't working and the Ruud website is completely useless. I can't find any warranty information at all.

Well, first it started knocking a big boom every time it would start up. (Under warranty) Then the reversing valve went bad ($600.00 plus) and now it's not cooling and is leaking refrigerant another ($400.00 plus) the unit is only 5 and a half years old. It's total junk !

"Most reliable system I have ever owned"
I used to be in the HVAC field, and have had American Standard, Carrier, Payne, Ducayne, and York. The worst were the Carrier and the York, although it is a toss up. The most reliable system I have ever owned is the Ruud Value series, thats right, value series. I would put it up against any of the above any day. It is durable, quiet, and a workhorse. I have friends that had Carriers installed recently, and have had techs out to their house 3-5 times within 7 months! Junk. Buy Ruud, you can't go wrong

2 1/2-year old heat pump and the expansion valve broke. So from my understanding, it is a known issue among these units. You'd think since Ruud knows they have an issue, they'd make a little more effort to compensate. And I tried, believe me. Part was covered under warranty but the labor involved was much more than the cost of the part. The new expansion valve is supposed to be improved according to the tech. We will see. Maybe this one will last more than a couple of years. To think I had other quotes for the same price and equivalent unit of unheard brands and went with this one, since I know the Ruud/Rheem name (roll eyes). I'll likely not buy another Ruud. Should have paid the extra and went with Trane like I wanted to.
Other 13PJL Reviews
