Rheem Prestige Heat Pump Overview

The Rheem Prestige heat pump refers to two series of discontinued heat pumps.. One series was the two-stage communicating motor heat pumps, or RPEL-JEC models. The other series included the single and two-stage models RPNL-, RPQL-, and RPRL-JEZ.

The Prestige communicating motor heat pumps offered serial communication if installed with specific air handlers and a specific thermostat. This allowed the unit to configure automatically and provide a higher level of comfort. The RPEL models also allowed the heat pump to be wired to an existing thermostat. The communication aspect seemed to be the only major difference in the two series.

Both series of the Rheem Prestige heat pumps can achieve a SEER of up to seventeen. All of the Prestige heat pumps utilize refrigerants with no CFC's or HCFC's to harm the environment.

Replaced dead builder grade A/C unit in 11 year old two story, 3000 sq foot home (old, single unit was pushed to the limit in summer) Got 4 competitive bids (Trane, Carrier, Goodman, Rheem), installed Rheem RPQL048JEZ Heat Pump and matched it with a new RGRM10EZAJS high efficiency (95%) furnace. Specifically requested new Rheem A coil (instead of Aspen, or off brand) allowing us to take advantage of Rheem's extended 10 year replacement warranty for all components (no extra cost – it pays to read the fine print). Federal Tax rebate ($1500) and local Heat Pump incentive ($600) saved us lots of money. Couldn't be happier. Flawless performance so far. Dramatically lower heating and cooling costs, quiet operation, better "conditioned" air (AprilAire whole house humidifier). Impressive air flow! Bedroom on the 2nd floor with lot's of windows facing west (afternoon summer sun) was a real challenge to cool with old unit. The Rheem can actually chill the room on a 100 degree day. Only hiccup was a buggy new Honeywell Thermostat, but the local installer replaced at no charge.

Purchased Rheem Prestige Series heat pump two years and very satisfied. Cools and heats great, keeps house at constant temperature. My winter and summer electric bill is 40% lower and I keep the house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter than the old unit. Highly recommend.

Just had a new Prestige 3 ton unit with variable speed air handler and touch thermostat. The air handler makes a lil noise when it's on high speed, but our old system was silent. Our old system also was very clogged, which made the air flow very slow. This system has about triple the air flow(old system Lennox). The air is ice cold (52 degrees) and we can get the air down to 65 if we want. The heat pump is almost silent—waaaay quieter than our Lennox. It seems to handle our air effortlessly. I will update this when heating season comes.

I see all these negative reviews, and I just can't help but wonder. 99% of the time when there is a problem with your HVAC system, it is Contractor error. Being in the business a few years back, I can safely tell you that it's not the equipment, but the installer. These units are fired up and quality tested at the plant before they are even boxed up. These issues that everybody talks about are caused by not pulling a proper vacuum (300 microns or less), no driers, undersized indoor coils, oversized outdoor systems. Contactors, relays, and other small parts will fail all the time no matter what name is stamped on the unit. These items have a limited life, and they are not manufactured by HVAC equipment mfgs anyway. Alright off my soap box. I had a new Rheem 18 Seer Prestige system put in last summer and it has been nothing short of amazing compared to the Trane that it replaced. It's super quiet and I haven't had any problems whatsoever with it. Just to let you know it's a new design(No contactors, or relays to burn out) So yeah, I would recommend it, but I want to stress the importance of finding a reputable dealer to install it. I used a Rheem Team Guy I found at the Rheem website and I would highly recommend them. Hanks Service was their name.

Other Prestige Reviews

A reviewer on wetheadmedia.com writes favorably about Rheem Prestige heat pumps. The writer praises Rheem for customer service and the on-board diagnostic system as very valuable for customers.

Hvac-talk.com published a post with a customer asking for expert opinions on whether to purchase a Trane heat pump system or the Rheem Prestige heat pump system. The contractors were divided, with some preferring each brand. One pointed out that if you have a trusted installer, go with the brand that he recommends.

A similar question was posed on gardenweb.com regarding two quotes on the Rheem Prestige heat pump versus the Trane, in a cooler climate in the northwestern United States. Two respondents chose the Rheem Prestige due to better performance statistics.
