Rheem Prestige Heat Pump Overview

The Rheem Prestige heat pump refers to two series of discontinued heat pumps.. One series was the two-stage communicating motor heat pumps, or RPEL-JEC models. The other series included the single and two-stage models RPNL-, RPQL-, and RPRL-JEZ.

The Prestige communicating motor heat pumps offered serial communication if installed with specific air handlers and a specific thermostat. This allowed the unit to configure automatically and provide a higher level of comfort. The RPEL models also allowed the heat pump to be wired to an existing thermostat. The communication aspect seemed to be the only major difference in the two series.

Both series of the Rheem Prestige heat pumps can achieve a SEER of up to seventeen. All of the Prestige heat pumps utilize refrigerants with no CFC's or HCFC's to harm the environment.

The only positive note regarding this unit is our electric bills have gone down. Other than that it is junk ( I realize this review needs to be professional ) so I'll be careful of my vocabulary. We had it installed three years ago last december. It ran ok for about 3 months then the snowball effect began. Several calls while under warranty including a txp or txv component, several leak calls with the last one estimated at $1200.00. as I write this review we are living without the unit working over the past two days. It will be several more days until a new heat pump is installed. Living in florida without air has made me an unhappy camper. Well not only is the product deficient, so is their customer service people. I e-mailed a complete letter listing our problems and asked rheem to at least send one of their techs to troubleshoot the unit. Do you think they would have responded? H**l no. They couldn't care less. So I have arrived at the point so many other customers have reached, we will be buying a new unit of another brand asap!!!. Rheem can go to you know where as far as we are concerned, and they can take the + 4000.00 with them.

"Stay far away from Rheem"

We had a Rheem heat pump installed in late 2010. The unit will not go 6 months without needing costly repairs. The latest repair is for a leaking evaporator coil. The warranty for the unit only covers parts (they do not consider the $350 worth of refrigerant a part). I have called Rheem and they will not stand behind their product. Considering the very high repair costs of a Rheem I would not recommend a Rheem product to anyone.

"Rheem 'Prestige' 3 ton heat pump is garbage!"

Had a 16 seer 3 ton prestige unit and blower installed in June 2009. March 2012 txv valve goes out and costs $420 to replace. Now the coils have 2 leaks…the repair guys say 'don't worry it's covered under warranty' but the $450 to do the work isn't. It worked fine for 2 years 9 months. What a piece of junk!! Installed a Carrier at the rental same year 1 month earlier…no issues. Rheem should be ashamed of their product(s) and change their business objectives to 'expensive anchors'. I will never buy their products again!

Rheem RPNL-042JEZ is a very good unit. Small leak after 12 years in coil, but fixed. Getting a little noisy with time, but will replace with another more efficient rheem for the same amount of money!!

Other Prestige Reviews

A reviewer on wetheadmedia.com writes favorably about Rheem Prestige heat pumps. The writer praises Rheem for customer service and the on-board diagnostic system as very valuable for customers.

Hvac-talk.com published a post with a customer asking for expert opinions on whether to purchase a Trane heat pump system or the Rheem Prestige heat pump system. The contractors were divided, with some preferring each brand. One pointed out that if you have a trusted installer, go with the brand that he recommends.

A similar question was posed on gardenweb.com regarding two quotes on the Rheem Prestige heat pump versus the Trane, in a cooler climate in the northwestern United States. Two respondents chose the Rheem Prestige due to better performance statistics.
