Heat pump overview

Heat pumps operate by transferring warm air from one place to another. In the summer, they transfer heat from inside the house to outside to keep your home cool. During the winter, they extract heat from outside air (even cold air holds heat) and pump it into your home to heat it. In areas with temperate climates, a heat pump can lead to significant cost savings on monthly energy bills. In more extreme temperature zones, heat pumps still work, but the financial savings are less.

There are two basic types of Amana heat pumps: traditional and package unit. A traditional heat pump is similar to an air conditioner with a reverse cycle added. Some parts are housed in a weather-resistant cabinet outside your home, while other components sit inside an indoor cabinet. Ducts are used to force air throughout your home.

If you have limited space, a package unit may be the right option for you. All of a package unit’s components are located in a single outdoor unit that can be installed on your roof or on a concrete pad outside your home.

When reviewing heat pumps, pay attention to their energy-efficiency ratings: the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and the HSPF (Heating Season Performance Factor). These numbers are derived by dividing the unit’s cooling or heating output, respectively, by the amount of electrical energy it consumes. The higher the numbers, the better the energy efficiency.

Care and maintenance

The best way to enhance the lifespan and energy efficiency of your Amana heat pump is to keep it clean. You should regularly clear clutter, vegetation, and debris from around the outdoor unit. Wipe down the vents inside your home periodically, and occasionally turn off the fan and clean it. Wash or change the filters monthly, and have your heat pump serviced annually by a local service technician.

Amana heat pump warranties

Amana heat pumps have strong warranties that include a limited 10-year warranty on parts. Higher-end heat pumps also feature a lifetime limited warranty on the compressor. Although labor charges are not included in standard warranties, extended warranty options that include labor may be available through your dealer.
