Overview of the HP26

The Lennox HP26 is a discontinued single-stage, Energy Star qualified heat pump with efficiency ratings of up to 14.70 SEER and 8.85 HSPF. A high pressure switch and filter drier were designed to help protect the Copeland scroll compressor. The unit was mounted on support feet to reduce vibration, while a quiet direct fan drive and HushTone cabinet design helped keep sound levels as low as 72 dB. The cabinet was constructed of heavy gauge galvanized steel with a powder paint finish to provide protection against the elements.

"Lennox heat pump and AC unit"
Defective materials. Both units had defective materials. Motor shaft rusted and fractured. Outside of warranty so Lennox would not accept any responsibility for defective material. Poor quality.

"Money Pit!"
I replaced my unit in 2005. By 2010, I replaced 2 compressor fans, compressor, TX valve, and more. Over 4K in additional expenses. It is an inferior product and never again will I ever get a Lennox.

"Poor installation. The company that installed the outdoor did so incorrectly"
The hp 26-30 Heat pump was installed in 2004. From the outset the unit was unusually noisy & vibrated. The installation technician checked the unit several times as did the company manager. Both advised that the unit was okay. I sent faxes to the Lennox offices in Dallas Texas, they didn't give me the courtesy of a reply. About 2 years later a neighbor was having a heat pump installed, I spoke with the installation tech about my problem. He checked the outdoor unit. His findings included: The outdoor unit was incorrectly installed, the compressor hadn't been balanced, the feet under the unit hadn't been correctly set up, incorrect sizing of copper tubing between the outdoor unit & indoor unit was used. This 'visiting' technician corrected these defects, the unit is now quieter & doesn't vibrate anymore. Cost to correct this sloppy work $480. Given the lack of response from the Lennox head office I doubt I would install any Lennox products in the future.

Do not install a Lennox in your home. They are in the business of selling parts for their faulty equipment. We built a new house in 2005 and had a 5 ton Lennox hp26 heat pump system installed. This summer the compressor went out the first time we turned it on. Luckily the part was under warranty, but the $1000 labor bill was not. Exactly 1 week later the evaporator coil sprung a leak. This part is not covered under warranty and cost $1300 to replace. Now, one month later, the unit has stopped cooling once again. Probably leaking refrigerant again. You would expect a brand new system would last longer than 5 years before breaking down. I always hear of ac units lasting 15 to 20 years before needing to be replaced. Must not be a Lennox, I guess. After discussing my problems with a few hvac service contractors, some refused to install the brand because they are so prone to problems. If you buy Lennox, be prepared to throw your money away.

Other HP26 Reviews

Online reviews of the HP26 on HVAC forums appear to be mostly positive. Several of the questions listed are regarding thermostat wiring. On hvac-talk.com, a consumer said he had to replace his HP26 but hated to because he really liked it. Another thread was from a consumer who liked the unit but said it vibrated when in heating mode. The cause turned out to be refrigerant lines that weren't properly supported and not a problem with the unit.
