Goodman makes a few different models of heat pump, which go from simple to complex (and from less efficient to relatively more efficient).
Heat pumps can transfer heat against a gradient. That is: they can move heat from outside to inside during the winter, and from inside to outside during the summer.
Cooling efficiency is measured in terms of SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio), while heating is described in terms of HSPF (heating seasonal performance factor).
Below is a listing of the models manufactured by Goodman.
The GSZ13 has a SEER of 13 and a 7.8 HSPF. It uses R-410A refrigerant, which is choline free and therefore probably not as damaging to the ozone layer as other coolant. It operates at a noisiness of between 71 and 76 decibels.
The unit uses "SmartShift" technology for defrosting. It contains copper tubing and an aluminum fin coil.
GSZ14 and SSZ14
The GSZ14 and SSZ14 heat pumps have SEER ratings of 14 and HSPF rating s of 9.0. They come with filter dryers and compressor sound blankets. Unlike the GSZ13, they have EnergyStar efficiency ratings. They run very slightly quieter.
The unit also uses "SmartShift" technology for defrosting. It contains copper tubing and an aluminum fin coil.
The SSZ16 has a SEER of 16 and an HSPF of 9.75. It has additional sound control features, such as a "high-density foam compressor sound blanket," "sound control top," and even a "factory-installed high-capacity muffler." It operates at between 70 and 72 decibels.
The SSZ16 utilizes "SmartShift" technology for defrosting and contains copper tubing and an aluminum fin coil.
The DSZC16 has a SEER of up to 18 and an HSPF of 8.5. It is actually one of the louder models of Goodman heat pump, averaging about 74 decibels.
An additional feature is the two-stage Copeland UltraTech scroll compressor, which may improve efficiency by varying power on the basis of the work that needs to be done. On days that are not particularly hot or cold, the full power of the heat pump will not be engaged.
The model also comes with diagnostic indicators that will alert the homeowner to the possibility of error, as well as "ComfortAlert diagnostics."
The unit is relatively easier to install because it uses a color-coded terminal and requires only two low-voltage wires for its connection to the outside.
The DSZC16 is compatible with the ComfortNet Communications System, which performs internal and external temperature monitoring to increase energy efficiency and speed of response.
The DSZC18 is the most energy efficient residential heat pump Goodman makes. It has a SEER of "up to 18" and an HSPF of 9.5. It features a sound reduction cover, a durable and weather-resistant finish
The unit includes high and low pressure switches, a wire fan discharge grille and the is also compatible with the ComfortNet Communications System, which performs internal and external temperature monitoring to increase energy efficiency and speed of response.
Care and Maintenance
Goodman recommends homeowners schedule professional tune-ups for the cooling systems in their home.
All models have ten-year limited warranties for their parts. For higher-quality models such as the DSZC18, the compressor is also covered by a lifetime warranty. Long-term service plans can be purchased through the GoodCare program.
