Overview of the SmartComfort VS 90
The Tempstar SmartComfort VS 90, also known as the T9MPV, is an Energy Star-rated variable speed, two-stage gas furnace with a 92-percent AFUE rating. It can be installed in tight quarters as an upflow, horizontal or downflow unit, although guard kits are required for downflow configurations. Compatible with several thermostats, the VS 90 is promoted by the manufacturer as an efficient and reliable furnace.
The VS 90’s primary heat exchanger is an RPJIII model with rippled edges that are designed to increase efficiency by forcing more heat to the exterior surface. An ECM variable speed motor reduces energy consumption by frequently operating at a lower speed.
The variable speed circulation blower motor is surrounded by an insulated cabinet with a tight fit door latch system. It is pre-lubed and balanced to decrease sound production. Additionally, the blower motor dehumidifies the air when the furnace is in cooling mode and improves indoor air quality.
The VS 90’s direct hot surface ignition system employs in-shot burners and an advanced silicon nitride igniter. The unit’s diagnostic capabilities aid with repairs, and safety features protect the home and unit by shutting down the furnace if a significant problem, such as a system blockage, arises.

"Our new FG9MAC hasnot worked and is 2 weeks old installer has no idea why"
We just had a 97% new model installed less than 2 weeks ago, and it has not worked properly yet. Right now it is not working at all. The installer has tried everything from cutting in a new return to replacing a breaker and a thermostat. The manufacturer has no answers, so the next step is to get a new motor and an ignition switch. We are freezing , but luckily have a fireplace. We had a perfectly old, working one but wanted an efficient one. Ha, we sure were stupid. Our installer said it was the best there is! I wish I had checked this site first.

I had a new Tempstar vs90 furnace and 14 seer heat pump installed last year. Compared to the old oil furnace, it is saving me big money in the winter. So far no problems to report. The unit is also very quiet. Can barely hear it running when it kicks on. I would recommend Tempstar to anyone. Properly installed, they'll give the same, if not better, performance than a much more expensive Carrier or Lennox, which I also got estimates on. Glad I made the choice I did.
Other SmartComfort VS 90 Reviews
In general, the SmartComfort VS 90 is considered a “good furnace” by many dealers in online discussion boards. However, it is possible that complications may arise when the furnace is operated by a generator, according to one homeowner posting a question on justanswer.com. According to the technician answering this question, many newer furnaces have issues when it comes to generator power, so customers who regularly rely on generators during frequent power outages should consider this occurrence.
