Furnace overview

All Goodman furnaces fall into two main types: traditional and package unit.

A traditional gas furnace is placed in a cabinet inside your home. If you have a traditional air conditioner, the furnace shares space with its indoor components. It also shares ducts and a thermostat. If you don’t have an air conditioner, then a gas furnace can be installed alone. Modern gas furnaces have an electric ignition system for added safety and convenience.

If you need both heating and cooling but have limited space, a package unit is a great choice. The unit bundles all the components you need into a single device installed on your roof or on a concrete pad outside your home.

All furnaces are rated for energy efficiency according to their AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) percentage. This number indicates how much of the furnace’s energy use actually becomes heat for your home. A higher number indicates a more efficient furnace. Package units are also rated for air conditioning efficiency with a similar number known as the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio).

Care and maintenance

Your gas furnace needs regular cleaning and maintenance to maximize its efficiency, safety, and lifespan. Healthy people living in a pet-free home should change the filter every 90 days. If you have pets, change your filter every 60 days. Homeowners with asthma or severe allergies, as well as those with numerous furry friends, may need to change the filter even more often, possibly every three weeks.

Keep all flammable materials away from your furnace. If anything spills near the floor registers, remove them and clean up the mess. Dust and debris, as well as pet hair and liquid spills, can make their way into the ducts, reducing efficiency. Vacuum and dust all vents and registers on a regular basis.

Periodically check the flames in the burner. They should burn with a clear, solid blue flame. Also, listen for any unusual noises or vibrations. Call a service professional right away if anything in the operation of your furnace seems amiss. Schedule an annual service appointment each fall, shortly before the heating season.

Goodman furnace warranties

Goodman warranties are among the most comprehensive in the industry. Even the lowest-end traditional furnaces carry a limited lifetime warranty on the heat exchanger and a 10-year limited warranty on the remaining parts. Package units have a 10-year limited parts warranty and a 20-year limited heat exchanger warranty. Extended warranties, which also include labor, are available through your dealer at an additional cost.
