Coleman Echelon Furnace Overview

The Coleman Echelon furnace series is available in four models. The mid-efficiency series is available in constant speed (8.M) and variable speed (8.C) models operating at 80 percent AFUE. In the high-efficiency, Energy Star-rated series, the constant speed (9.M) is available at 97 percent AFUE and the variable speed (9.C) model at up to 98 percent AFUE.

These furnaces use induced combustion, a hot surface ignition and aluminized tubular heat exchangers. As modulating furnaces, they fire at 1 percent increments for maximized indoor comfort. The variable speed models come with an optional ECM fan motor that circulates air for long periods of time to improve air filtration and maintain consistent temperatures throughout the home.

I bought a home with ancient equipment. I needed a replacement furnace and air conditioner. I knew what contractor I wanted to hire before I learned what equipment I wanted to purchase. B. Carlson Heating & Air coached me through the process in choosing the right equipment for my home and my comfort. I purchased a furnace, air conditioner, humidifier, and air purification unit for my home. I am very satisfied with the contractor and the equipment.

My 19 year old single stage 80% gas furnace developed a crack in the heat exchanger. After doing some research I decided to opt for a high efficiency, modulating gas furnace. I obtained several quotes ranging from $2900 to $5300 for similar performing products. My approach was simply to ask for recommendations given my desire to replace the old furnace with a high efficiency modulating furnace. I was amazed by the difference in prices/recommendations. I settled on the Coleman CP9C based on the recommendation by Providence Heating & Cooling. Mike was very knowledgable, and the only contractor that took the time to review registers/ducting/area and discuss the performance/drawbacks of my current install, and what I was looking for in a new furnace. He explained options and price points and differences in functionality and the results I could expect. His recommendation was for a Coleman CP9C, a product I hadn’t even considered. Being very technical, I reviewed install documents and specifically the modulating aspect of the products that had been recommended. Initially my concern with the CP9C was with the lack of support for two stage thermostats (I didn’t want to go with the proprietary communicating thermostat). The modulating logic being entirely on the control board, which controls the fire rate from 35% in 0.5% increments all the way up to 100%. In practice, the control board adjusts the fire rate on each call for heat, presumably based on the prior duration of “On-Heat” call. The furnace was installed in early spring, a time which here in the Pacific Northwest, can see outside temperatures fluctuate by more than 35 degrees. I can honestly say that the furnace has operated flawlessly in maintaining an even temperature through the home. I’m seeing long low fire rate runs and an even temperature distribution, where previously I had “cold spots”. All in all, I am very satisfied with this furnace, the added comfort is certainly noticeable, and would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a good modulating furnace. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation to the manufacturer of this product or any contractor/organization involved in any way with this product/install. I’m simply a very satisfied customer passing on my experience for anyone finding themselves in the same position I was in, i.e. trying to navigate the overwhelming number of options available in the purchase of gas furnace and seeking to make an informed decision.

"Great Unit"

This is a good unit. The last one was 12 years old. A lot of the reviews here don’t make sense. This gas furnace is the best. Really gets us toasty. If you don’t know Coleman then you are from another planet. A lot of people don’t realize it but all brands have bad reviews.

Other Echelon Reviews

While the Echelon series is promoted as being extremely quiet, consumers in online discussion forums complain about the operational noise. Several technicians replying to this concern on suggests that the noise is not from the unit itself, but from the air flow in the duct work. Addressing another noise complaint about the Echelon, a technician on explains that the furnace uses a blower system to burn the gas at utmost efficiency. According to this tech, this can lead to a high pitched whine that could be the cause of the complaint.
