My 19 year old single stage 80% gas furnace developed a crack in the heat exchanger. After doing some research I decided to opt for a high efficiency, modulating gas furnace. I obtained several quotes ranging from $2900 to $5300 for similar performing products. My approach was simply to ask for recommendations given my desire to replace the old furnace with a high efficiency modulating furnace. I was amazed by the difference in prices/recommendations. I settled on the Coleman CP9C based on the recommendation by Providence Heating & Cooling. Mike was very knowledgable, and the only contractor that took the time to review registers/ducting/area and discuss the performance/drawbacks of my current install, and what I was looking for in a new furnace. He explained options and price points and differences in functionality and the results I could expect. His recommendation was for a Coleman CP9C, a product I hadn’t even considered. Being very technical, I reviewed install documents and specifically the modulating aspect of the products that had been recommended. Initially my concern with the CP9C was with the lack of support for two stage thermostats (I didn’t want to go with the proprietary communicating thermostat). The modulating logic being entirely on the control board, which controls the fire rate from 35% in 0.5% increments all the way up to 100%. In practice, the control board adjusts the fire rate on each call for heat, presumably based on the prior duration of “On-Heat” call. The furnace was installed in early spring, a time which here in the Pacific Northwest, can see outside temperatures fluctuate by more than 35 degrees. I can honestly say that the furnace has operated flawlessly in maintaining an even temperature through the home. I’m seeing long low fire rate runs and an even temperature distribution, where previously I had “cold spots”. All in all, I am very satisfied with this furnace, the added comfort is certainly noticeable, and would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a good modulating furnace. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation to the manufacturer of this product or any contractor/organization involved in any way with this product/install. I’m simply a very satisfied customer passing on my experience for anyone finding themselves in the same position I was in, i.e. trying to navigate the overwhelming number of options available in the purchase of gas furnace and seeking to make an informed decision.
