Coleman Echelon Furnace Overview

The Coleman Echelon furnace series is available in four models. The mid-efficiency series is available in constant speed (8.M) and variable speed (8.C) models operating at 80 percent AFUE. In the high-efficiency, Energy Star-rated series, the constant speed (9.M) is available at 97 percent AFUE and the variable speed (9.C) model at up to 98 percent AFUE.

These furnaces use induced combustion, a hot surface ignition and aluminized tubular heat exchangers. As modulating furnaces, they fire at 1 percent increments for maximized indoor comfort. The variable speed models come with an optional ECM fan motor that circulates air for long periods of time to improve air filtration and maintain consistent temperatures throughout the home.

"Junk"

Installed in 2009. Has had regular maintenance. We have had 1 or 2 calls every year for ‘furnace out’. Usually due to the pressure switch but other parts too, including the motherboard. This is a problem in the upper Midwest where a furnace out can mean frozen water pipes, etc. The installer tells me he has stopped installing Coleman furnaces, “too much trouble”.

I have owned this furnace about 8 years and have replaced 3 circuit boards, 2 switches and now likely the blower. The system receives an annual checkup but has yet to run more than 12 months without a problem. Do not buy one.

The personnel know their job and their equipment, and they will tell you the cost before work is completed. The equipment has reduced our utility costs by $50 per month. The equipment is warranted, the house does not have the cold areas we had with the old system. We would buy the same system if we ever did need a new system in another home. Our only disappointment is the fact that we should have done this switch over to Coleman years before. We considered geothermal when we spoke with the salesman, but at our age felt it would not pay back. A neighbor three house away has the Geothermal Coleman system from this same company and is very very happy.

"Coleman modulating furnace"

This furnace was recommended as one of the most advanced and efficient furnaces on the market. The gas valve control system was said to have 100 stages and the blower changes speed to maintain a precise supply air temperature. It’s been in for a couple of weeks now and the house has been very comfortable.

Several times the installers have come back to deal with what they term as “harmonics”. As air is pulled in through the return vent a “harmonic” sound happens due to vibration of the unit. It is not a regular happening but it is an annoying sound to the average ear and occurs both day and night. Otherwise the unit is good and accommodates the size of my condo. I was pleased with the financial arrangement and the amount I paid for both the furnace and air conditioner.

Other Echelon Reviews

While the Echelon series is promoted as being extremely quiet, consumers in online discussion forums complain about the operational noise. Several technicians replying to this concern on hvac-talk.com suggests that the noise is not from the unit itself, but from the air flow in the duct work. Addressing another noise complaint about the Echelon, a technician on askville.amazon.com explains that the furnace uses a blower system to burn the gas at utmost efficiency. According to this tech, this can lead to a high pitched whine that could be the cause of the complaint.
