Overview of the GMS9

The Goodman GMS9 is a discontinued single-stage, multi-speed gas furnace with an efficiency of 93% AFUE. It had an aluminized steel tubular primary heat exchanger and a stainless steel secondary heat exchanger. Quiet operation was provided by a corrosion-resistant, sound-isolated induced draft blower assembly and fully insulated heavy gauge steel cabinet. The GMS9 was designed for multi-position installation, including upflow and horizontal right or left positions. Other features included aluminized steel inshot burners, multiple flame roll-out switches and a blower door safety switch. Gas and electric connections were located on both right and left sides of the unit.

"Piece of dangerous junk"
The furnace was installed in May of 2005. It needed repairs every couple of years and would not keep running. Today, I found out the heat exchanger is cracked! If it had not shut down, we would be dead! The tech registered carbon monoxide levels of 9200 ppm! Called Goodman, they pretty much said, we don't care, nothing we will do for you. The service tech told us this was the second GMS9070 he'd found with a cracked heat exchanger in the past week! The heat exchanger is covered under warranty, but we would have to pay labor. Screw Goodman, I am having this piece of junk removed from my home and having a Trane put in. Goodman furnaces are very, very unsafe!

"Garbage furnace"
My home is 9 years old. I have lived in it for 7 years and the Goodman furnace was brand new when installed 9 years ago. In the 7 years that I have lived in this house, I have had to replace the blower motor, the heat exchanger, and now the vent motor. Goodman furnaces are junk! I have regular maintenance annually. My old house was 30 years old and so was the furnace, and never did we have to complete a repair on it. If you are looking for a new furnace - do not buy Goodman!

"Furnace sets code - blink light three times"
I have Goodman model gms951155dxa. It shuts off and sets the above code. You have to tirn it off and after few seconds turn it on again and it will work. Never know when it will shut off. I had installer and other tech for repair but did not do any good. The furnace was installed in April 2006. Problem persists. When you go out, you will never know what will happen.

"DIY"
When I first bought my gms9 93% I thought it was a solid unit. Quiet and modern looking. Draft inducer seal went the first year and leaked water inside the unit and all over my floor. Now on its third year and I will be replacing the flame sensor. The draft inducer motor whines a bit now. Not looking forward to that repair bill if and when it comes. Not a horrible unit if your comfortable doing repairs yourself, but I don't think I will buy another goodman product or recommend them to anyone. On the other hand, I've never owned anything else to compare this one too.

Other GMS9 Reviews

A comparison of the GMS9 and a similar Tempstar unit on hvac-talk.com found that writers had a slight preference for the Tempstar, although most agreed that the installer is more important than the brand. A comparison with a similar Payne unit on hvac-talk.com is split between the two units with most reviewers saying more information is needed from the installer. The warranty on the GMS9 is mentioned as very good in this discussion by a couple of reviewers

GMS9 Warranty

The Goodman GMS9 is covered by a lifetime limited heat exchanger warranty to the original homeowner and a 5-year limited warranty on parts. The warranty does not cover labor or shipping. No warranty is offered by Goodman for any product ordered over the internet.
