Gibson is the brand name for the line of furnaces manufactured by Nordyne. The manufacturer produces a wide range of oil and gas furnaces with varied features to help meet specific cost and efficiency needs of users.
Single-Stage Gas Furnaces
The Gibson fixed-speed/single-stage furnace is designed for consumers with basic heating needs. These come in models with varied energy efficiencies, as denoted by their AFUE values--80 percent, 92.1 percent or 95 percent. Several of these models were designed to fit in tight spaces.
Two-Stage Gas Furnaces
According to the manufacturer, the Gibson fixed-speed/two-stage furnace provides more consistent heating throughout a house than the basic fixed-speed/one-stage model. On mildly cold days, the two-stage model expends about 68 percent of its heating capacity to meet heating requirements. This is the first stage of the furnace and constitutes about 80 percent of all instances. On colder days, the unit automatically moves to the second stage and uses more of its heating capacity to meet the increased heating needs. There are two variations of this unit, with 80 percent and 95.1 percent AFUE values respectively. The U.S. Department of Energy considers a 95 percent AFUE to be the hallmark of a high-efficiency heating system.
All of Gibson's gas furnaces are enclosed within a heavy-gauge, scratch-resistant cabinet. A SmartLite® control board protects and adds durability to the igniter.
Four-Speed/Single-Stage Oil Furnaces
The four-speed/single-stage oil furnace is a professional-grade heating unit with an 80 percent AFUE. Its electrical and mechanical components are fully tested during manufacturing to ensure that they meet efficiency and safety standards. A heavy-gauge steel cabinet protects these components and also increases the durability of the unit.
Care and Maintenance of Gibson Furnaces
Nordyne advises having your Gibson furnace serviced annually only by an authorized technician or your servicing dealer. They also recommend semi-annual preventive maintenance inspection routines on the whole unit and/or its specific accessories. These should be carried out only by a qualified technician, contractor or dealer. Scheduling and conducting regular annual maintenance checks will help keep the unit in sterling working condition for a long period of time. You also can perform yourself tasks such as cleaning the filters and/or changing them.
All Gibson furnaces come with a 1-year limited warranty on their electrical and mechanical components, provided the user registers the unit within 60 days of installation. The heat exchanger comes with a limited lifetime warranty, valid only if the unit has been registered. Additionally, as part of the company's 1-year Quality Pledge program, the heat exchanger on a Gibson gas furnace is replaced if the original component fails within the first year of installation.
