Overview of Performance 93

The Carrier Performance 93 Furnace is a discontinued Energy Star-rated furnace operating at 38,000 to 128,000 BTU/H. This two-stage multi-poise unit had an AFUE rating of up to 93 percent, and the galvanized steel cabinet had a top coat of baked on urethane and polyester for corrosion resistance. It operated with natural gas, yet also was LP convertible.

The Performance 93 employed the company's Comfort Heat technology, which reduced cyclical temperature changes in the home by predicting the need for heat. In addition to the unit's high-efficiency air filtration cabinet and sealed combustion system, it featured a heat exchanger with a Serpentuff polypropylene laminate coating that the manufacturer said enabled the unit to extract almost all of the heat produced.

This unit had a pilot-free Powerheat ignition, a QuieTech noise reduction system and on-board diagnostics to help speed service and maintenance needs. Add-ons, such as the optional humidifier, were available. The Performance 93 was part of Carrier's Performance furnace line.

Unhappy customer

Co2 detector going off. Furnace is 8 years old secondary heat exchanger failed Carrier should have sent out a recall on this unit knowing the problem exist. What is it going to take house burning down or a loss of a family do to piss poor design. Never buy a Carrier product again.

Flame out relay saved our house

During the 2nd week of January 2014 the furnace started to shutdown on flame back and after several furnace repair companies look at the problem ( we called a Carrier rep also) they determined that we have a defective secondary heat exchanger, either cracked or totally burned out and plugged up. Out of all the appliances in our home I thought that our furnace was just in the middle of its lifespan and I really could not believe that it was bad. After doing some research we found out that there is this class action lawsuit that should help to pay for our repairs. (Class action lawsuit that was settled shows that Carrier used an inferior material in the secondary heat exchangers that may cause corrosion and failure; Carrier denied wrongdoing but settled the lawsuit. That is exactly what happened to our furnace.) It is unconscionable to realize that Carrier cared so little about their customers of more than 3 million that they did not informed and issued a recall of this dangerous product. Several of the reps recommended that we get a new furnace due to the fact that the new, hi efficiency furnaces last only 15 or so years. Our furnace went thru only 10.5 years of heating cycles. (The heat exchanger warranty was for 20 years) This unit was installed by Four seasons Heating and cooling of Gilberts, il 60136 which were at the time a Carrier dealer. Upon calling Four Seasons they informed us that they were no longer a Carrier distributor. We then determined that we will put in a new furnace and apply for a credit that the class action lawsuit specified. Working with the current Carrier dealer it became apparent that they were not aware or interested in getting us the credit that we should be receiving on a new Carrier unit. Their price for new unit from Carrier was substantially higher that competitors (with same ratings) leading us to believe that we were really not getting any credit at all. We hired Comfort Masters and install a new furnace from Lennox via Costco. We are here applying for a refund as specified in the lawsuit. Refer to the sections which show that credit would be issued to “anyone who previously experienced a failed secondary heat exchanger”. We tried over the phone but we received no satisfaction and were referred to a write in appeal. Ray Gust

.Vent motor seized after 3 years

Vent motor seized after 3 heat...minus 35 degrees outside. Motor was replaced and now it sounds like a twin prop airplane is taking off everytime the furnace turns on. Service guy replaced it again and no change. Read the other comments from other carrier performance 93 customers and it looks like we have something in common. a poorly made vent motor. Carrier should recall them and make a better housing that isn't so cheap. Maybe a motor that doesn't die after 3 years would be a good idea as well. Won't by a Carrier ever again!!

Excellent So Far - Performance 93 - Carrier

Carrier Performance 93 Gas Furnace installed 3 months ago. Very satisfied so far, and a 10 year parts/labor warranty was included by Carrier. I think that most times if you do not choose a good installer you will run into problems. So far, this unit is great, running at low speed most of the time. The bills are dramatically lower after switching from oil heat.

I don't know what some people are talking about. Maybe they didn't have their furnace installed properly or something. I had the Carrier Performance 93 installed 4 years ago and it has been one of the best investments I've ever made. We live in Toronto, and it has only cost us $460 to heat our house for the entire winter.(fyi- we only have a small bungalow, but still!) When we moved in, we had an old oil furnace so we had it replaced, and over the course of 3 winters we have saved approx.$900. I've never touched the furnace yet and it works great!

I had the Performance 93 installed about 3 months ago, What a mistake. A very costly mistake. First, there is the noise level, it wakes me up all night when it turns on. I woke at 0430 this morning from the unbalanced or just poorly made/assembled induction fan noise. When the unit is operating it was causing so much vibration in my office I had to remove pictures from the wall. This was only a temporary setback, you see after the switch that turns the gas on failed the unit shut down and no longer operated. My noise problem was solved, it was 56 in my house, The repairman has been over 5 times (Great service)to fix the problem, you can't fix a poorly designed product, it is what it is. I now sit in the living room with a $30. space heater and the living space closed off, waiting for yet another fan assembly for my $7500. unit. What a piece of JUNK! I wish there was something to check that was 3 steps below VERY UNSATISFIED!

Other Performance 93 Reviews

Online reviews of this unit suggest that The Performance 93 is considered a good unit overall. Among the few complaints posted on online discussion forums is one on from a homeowner with a Performance 93 that for the first year after installation worked flawlessly. Soon, however, the homeowner writes that his unit grew increasingly louder and over time the noise was accompanied by strong vibrations. A visiting maintenance technician has repeatedly changed out the inducer motor, having heard this model has an issue with this particular part, but this fix has not improved the rattling noise. Techs posting on this online forum suggest the homeowner have his tech examine ducts for loose parts, the fan blade and connections, the balance of the blower wheel, the blower motor cage and other possible solutions.
