An air handler is an appliance which pushes air across a split unit central air conditioner’s evaporator coil and into the ducts. It is the fan that blows cold air through your house.
If you have a warm air furnace in your house, your air conditioner will generally “piggy-back” off of your furnace, using its fan instead of an air handler. However, if you don’t have a warm air furnace, you will need to install an air handler to accomplish this task.
