Overview of the MC (formerly Munchkin Contender)
The HTP MC is a discontinued ultra-high efficiency condensing gas-fired boiler. Formerly known as the Munchkin Contender, the MC had an efficiency rating of up to 94% AFUE and was Energy Star rated. It was a wall-mounted unit, easily convertible from natural gas to propane, and featured a 316L stainless steel heat exchanger and a direct spark ignition system. The MC had built-in direct hot water priority and outdoor air reset capability, with ultra-low NOx emissions. All mechanical connections were on the bottom of the unit for easy servicing, with the ability to cascade up to 8 units. The unit's cabinet was constructed of dent-resistant lightweight plastic.

Brought the house with it and was only 3 years old when installed. Now 10th year on the boiler and I have spent over $7000. The amount of stress caused by this unit is unbelievable. Like other reviewers, I have woken up at night just to see if the boiler works so I can take a shower in the morning when I wake up. Have experienced all kinds of codes in spite of having a $700 yearly contract(air-conditions included) to service this useless unit. If yours works well, don't bet on it.

Boiler broke within a year. We have had it fixed 4 times in 6 years, usually the heat exchanger, but also leaks in the tank. Need to get it replaced as we obviously have a lemon. HTP will not replace it, even though it's obvious that there are major problems with this unit. I would never buy another HTP product.

"Too costly to maintain"
I purchased the boiler in October of 2007. It is a Munchkin Contender Propane 120m. It is extremely costly to have it serviced once a year. There is no one on the South Shore that can service this product. I called the factory and they told me to call Emerson Swan Company. They want $500.00 to come and clean/tune it. In 4 years of them servicing my boiler, I could purchase a brand new one. The boiler is extremely noisy too when it clears the exhaust and then fires the boiler. This unit is located in my utility room, not the basement. So it wakes everyone up all the time.

Junk, Lemmon! Terrible machine. Fault codes all the time, almost shakes itself apart. So bad my heating company replaced it with a new one because they couldn't get the first one to run correctly. This second machine is just as bad. Shakes and faults out every week!

"Unexplained 50% increase in heating bill"
We replaced a 15 year old boiler with the Contender (mc-80) and their Superstore Ultra (80 gallon) sidearm, just a few months ago. It is running both domestic and radiant floor heating. While the unit has experienced none of the problems mentioned by others, we are using twice the amount of propane as in the previous winter (and this winter's temps are higher)! The house is a small one - just under 1200 sq ft - with low ceilings, all new double paned windows and doors, and tons of solar gain - and yet our propane bill is $600 every month! The propane company came out and checked for a leak - none was found. The plumber won't take the responsibility for this one, neither will Munchkin. I have no idea where/how this level of heat loss could occur (if anyone has input, I would love to hear it). But I do know that we're going to have to rip out our brand new $5K + system and replace it with a $300 "inefficient" boiler - in order to be able to afford living in our house...

"Piece of crap"
We were talked into the Munchkin Contender and it was installed in the summer of 08. It vibrates and makes a pounding noise that will wake the family up in the middle of the night. Wish I kept my old boiler. Our installer doesn’t return our calls anymore. This is just a piece of junk.......

There were several replies from professionals who believe it could be due to bad installation or bad parts. There was also a wiring question from a homeowner on doityourself.com who was planning to wire his MC boiler and didn't understand the instructions.
