Overview of the MPO
The Burnham MPO boiler series includes five sizes ranging in capacity from 0.6 to 1.65 gallons; this line has been discontinued in favor of the similar MPO-IQ series, which includes the IQ control system from Honeywell.
The MPO series of cast iron, oil-fired, high-efficiency boilers operate at 87 percent AFUE and are Energy Star-qualified. They also are capable of three vent options using stainless steel connections. The unit is surrounded by 3 inches of insulation and a steel jacket with powder coating.
The heat exchanger for the MPO series has individual cast iron sections contoured by a computerized machine to ensure the accuracy of the shape and fit are precise. The series’ design is intended to provide above-average efficiency as heat in the flue gases is recirculated into the heat exchanger before venting takes place. The removable flueway baffles also are meant to maximize efficiency, while making cleaning and installation simple. In addition, the unit has a built-in second zone control. A choice of burners, including the Beckett NX burner, is available.

I replaced a 30 year old Burnham oil boiler with their new mpo115 last summer. Now that I have a years worth of history, I can see that I have saved over 25% on my oil consumption. I was a little concerned about using another Burnham, but my contractor told me this mpo is a good boiler and easy for him to service and he has installed over 100 of them with good results.

We have had our Burnham mpo series oil boiler for about 4 years. This was the first one our contractor installed and he has been impressed on the ease of servicing each year. Very reliable so far, and we have saved a lot on our fuel bills.

I purchased Oil Fired mpo147 87%, had a Tekmar 260 installed with it. I Had a V84(3yrs) before and was happy with it, but I'm ecstatic with the mpo I've saved 30% on my Oil Bill. I went from 1,000-1,100 Gallons to 750 gallons the first year and 800 gallons this year(it was colder this year). Yes Burnham has had some problems but I'm being told that their failure rate is now 4 bad out of a Million.
Other MPO Reviews
Online discussion boards such as hvac-talk.com tend to focus on Burnham’s MPO-IQ boiler, rather than the standard MPO unit. In general, these units are regarded as durable, high-performing units that hold up in the field and offer few problems. Technicians on heatinghelp.com consider the unit’s triple pass construction to be “the way to go.”
The heat exchanger of the Burnham Boiler MPO series comes with a lifetime limited warranty. The Boiler Extended Warranty Plan provides coverage on parts and labor for a 5- or 10-year period after the date of installation.
